Sun SPARC® Enterprise M4000 Server: Repair Procedures

This section provides tips (when available) for the most common repair procedures for the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 Server. The repair procedures are provided in the following manual:

Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000/M5000 Servers Service Manual (819-2210).

The following table provides tips associated with each component.

Component Tips
DC Converters
  • Some Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000/M5000 X-options and FRUs may have loose DC to DC converters (DDC). (FAB 1019211.1236971).
Ethernet
  • Small number of Northstar Dual GBE -03 cards may fail on certain systems due to defective voltage mux. (FAB 1000525.1).
  • Northstar Dual GBE -02 cards do not support Solaris netboot on SPARC systems. (FAB 1000141.1).
Fan
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 Servers may experience erroneous fan failures using XCP 1050 (FAB 1000497.1 ).
I/O
  • Sun External I/O Expansion Unit Fiber Optic Link Card fails after 500 power-on days. (FAB 1019624.1).
Miscellaneous
  • Systems not updated to Solaris 10 08/07 and XCP 1061 will not be able to take advantage of certain platform features, may experience potential performance issues, may experience "disk full" related reboots on their eXtended System Control Facility Unit (XSCF) which can lead to XSCF replacement, and may not benefit from bug fixes included in the newer release of software. Rack
  • Prevention of SPARC Enterprise M4000 Rail Kit Failures. (FAB 1020275.1).
Removable Media
  • DAT drive install or replacement on early Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 servers may result in damage to a data cable inside the system. (FAB 1000034.1).
