Optical transmitter on Fiber Optic Link Card fails after 500 power-on days (see details below).

Affected X-Options:

SENX8LK2Z
SENX8LK3Z

Affected Parts:

501-7040-06 (or below)   Fibre Link Card

Impact

Domain failure which can only be corrected by replacement of the Fibre Link Card (Sun P/N 501-7040).  These cards will fail after 500 days power-on days, including test time.

Contributing Factors

Above listed systems having a Fibre Link Card (Sun P/N 501-7040-06 or below) are impacted by this issue.

Symptoms

The optical transmitter used on the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit Fiber Optic Link Card fails after 500 power-on days.  Failure of the optical transmitter results in domain failure.

Root Cause

During the transition to RoHS6 compliance, Sun's supplier changed from an on-board based EEPROM to a packaged EEPROM.  This changed the capacity from 32k bytes to 4k bytes.  The aging factor which is loaded into EEPROM age block was not modified to account for the smaller capacity.  This will shutdown the part after 500 power-on days, including test time.

Product was put on StopShip, and Manufacturing inventory purged via SSP# P001-20512, until 501-7040-07 was released via ECO# WO_39114 as of April 28, 2008.  Services initiated a purge via GSAP 4308 as of May 14, 2008.

Corrective Action

Comments

It is imperative that affected systems are remediated in order of their priority, as listed in SunFIT.  Priority 1 systems will fail in the October/November time frame.  As a guideline, remediate the affected system, by priority, no more than a month before they reach 500 days from their ship date.  Ship dates may be viewed in the system S/N details in SunFIT.

Priority 1    500 days = Oct/08 - Nov/08
Priority 2    500 days = Dec/08 - Jan/09
Priority 3    500 days = Feb/09 - Mar/09
Priority 4    500 days = Apr/09
Priority 5    500 days = May/09 - Jun/09
Priority 6    500 days = Jul/09 - Oct/09

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in other Customer outages when they reach the 500 day threshold and parts are not available to remediate their affected systems.
