Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6632311>

Part
  • Part No: 541-0905-xx
  • Part Description: 60mm Fan, Fan_B

Impact

A bug with the XCP 1050 Firmware for Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 systems may cause the system to incorrectly determine a 60mm fan is faulty when it is not.

Contributing Factors

This issue is restricted to the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 Server and the 60mm fans in that system when running XCP 1050.

Symptoms

If this issue occurs users may see the following messages when running the showlogs error command in XSCF:

XSCF> showlogs -V error
Date: Oct 10 16:26:28 EDT 2007     Code: 80002000-c9ff0000-0104341500000000

Root Cause

XCP 1050 was released with a value for minimum fan speed rotation for the 60mm fans which was too high.  As a result, a fan which meets acceptable manufacturing tolerances for rotation speed can be incorrectly flagged as being faulty.

Resolution

If a customer has upgraded to XCP 1050 and is experiencing this issue, the customer should upgrade to XCP 1060.  There are no other recommended workarounds.  Do not replace the fan until the firmware has been updated as there is no guarantee a replacement fan will not exhibit the same issue.

This issue is resolved in XCP 1060 through correcting the minimum fan speed value in the software.  XCP 1060 firmware may be obtained from the Sun Download Center via the below link;

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

This issue only affects the small (60mm) fans in an M4000. If you encounter this situation, it will be on an upgrade to XCP 1050 from 1041 or below.  A fan that was previously "Normal" will suddenly become "Faulted" with the error message listed above.  Any other fan in the system (including 172mm fans and power supply fans) should be changed if the status reports "Faulted" for any reason.  Only the 60mm fans (FAN_B) are affected.

Internal Comments

This is being handled in manufacturing as PITT #1706. Sun CR number for this issue is 6632311 but as this issue was also discovered by Fujitsu, the issue was fixed by Fujitsu and the CR contains inaccurate state information.
