Sun Fire[tm] V1280 / Netra[tm] 1280 Server: Repair Procedures

This section provides the most common repair procedures for the Sun Fire V1280 / Netra 1280 which are included in the Sun Fire V1280 / Netra 1280 Service Manual (817-0510).

The following table provides the section numbers for each procedure.

Component Tips
CPU/Memory Boards
  • The Vcore setting for UltraSPARC IV 1350MHz boards should be 1.25V, but some earlier releases of firmware will power on and operate the board at an incorrect voltage. (FIN I1166-1).
  • EMI gaskets and spring fingers on Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 boards may detach and cause component damage when they fall into the system (FIN I1035-1).
  • New installation procedure for Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 boards is now available (FIN I0993-1). See 817-2675 for the procedure.
  • A plunger assembly in the chassis may interfere with System Board 0 as it is slid into or out of the chassis (FIN I0974-1).
  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800, V1280 and Netra 1280 systems may experience false data parity error messages (FIN I1020-1).
  • A limited set of Sun Fire System Boards may be vulnerable to Uncorrectable Errors in L2 SRAM. (FCO A0248-1).
Disk Drives
  • Improved firmware for Seagate 10K.6 disk drives will reduce the incidence of unexpected outages due to a spindle motor issue (FAB 1006064.1).
IB_SSC Assembly
  • The new PCI+ IB_SSC IO Assembly is not properly supported by any release of Solaris 8. (FAB 1000198.1).
  • E2900/V1280 systems that have the PCI+ IB_SSC IO Assembly will not be able to install or boot from Solaris 9 9/05 DVD or CD. (FAB 1001327.1).
  • EMI gaskets and spring fingers on Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 boards may detach and cause component damage when they fall into the system (FIN I1035-1).
  • I/O System Controller (IB_SSC) assemblies for Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 have been incorrectly left in Manufacturing Mode (FIN I1022-1).
  • New installation procedure for Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 boards is now available (FIN I0993-1). See 817-2675 for the procedure.
  • Some Netra 1280 servers may shut down due to ESD static discharge and are not NEBs compliant. (FCO A0254-1).
L2 Repeater Board
  • EMI gaskets and spring fingers on Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 boards may detach and cause component damage when they fall into the system (FIN I1035-1).
  • New installation procedure for Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 boards is now available (FIN I0993-1). See 817-2675 for the procedure.
Main Fans
  • Main Fan 6 and Main Fan 7 failures can cause reduced system availability in Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 servers (FIN I0924-1).
Memory DIMMS
  • Best Practices Guide for Memory Errors for diagnosing UltraSPARC III memory errors now available (FIN I1018-1).
  • 512MB DIMMs are now supported in Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 systems. (FIN I0961-2).
  • Diagnosing Main Memory errors versus L2SRAM errors on UltraSPARC III and UltraSPARC III Cu systems (FIN I0954-1).
  • On certain Sun Systems a small number of 512MB and 1GB Micron DIMMs may experience premature failures with Uncorrectable Memory Error (UE) messages. (FAB 1000920.1) (formerly FCO A0285-1)
  • A sub-population of DIMMs that shipped between 2001 and 2002 on the below platforms are showing significantly lower reliability than expected (FCO A0253-1).
Miscellaneous
  • Preventing potential system outages through proactive cooling improvements on Sun Fire Entry Level servers. (FAB 1021064.1).
Removable Media Module
  • System door interferes with Tape Drive operation. (FAB 1000078.1).
  • Attempting to remove the SCSI cable from a Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Media Bay, or the SCSI Card Reader cable that connects to the SSC card reader, will result in damage to the server (FIN I1052-1).
SCC Reader
  • Attempting to remove the SCSI cable from a Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Media Bay, or the SCSI Card Reader cable that connects to the SSC card reader, will result in damage to the server (FIN I1052-1).
