Ultra[tm] 80 Workstation: Repair Procedures

This section provides the most common repair procedures for the Ultra 80 workstation. The written procedures below are links to the Sun Ultra 80 Service Manual (805-6618).

Component Tips
CPU Module
  • Tuning the ecache_scan_rate parameter of the Solaris cache scrubber provides improved Ecache parity error protection on non-mirrored SRAM UltraSPARC II-based systems (FIN I0755-1).
  • OS mapping versus physical location of CPU modules for E420R, E450, U80 and Netra t1400/t1405 systems may lead to incorrect module replacement (FIN I0749-1).
  • The current diagnostic procedure to identify the faulty CPU module from CPU Ecache parity errors is flawed (FIN I0570-3).
  • 440MHz and 450MHz UltraSPARC II Modules in Ultra 60/80, Enterprise 220R/420R and Netra t platforms may experience Red State Exception, Send Mondo Timeout and hard hangs (FCO A0208-3).
Disk Drive
  • Improved firmware for Seagate 10K.6 disk drives will reduce the incidence of unexpected outages due to a spindle motor issue (I1136-1).
  • 18.2GB and 36GB IBM disk drives may be susceptible to early life failures problem (FIN I0724-2).
  • Systems with 18.2GB and 36GB IBM disk drives may experience higher than expected failure rate. (FCO A0182-2).
Memory Riser Assembly
  • See Memory Riser Assembly Damage Caution.
  • System initialization failures are sometimes being diagnosed incorrectly due to an improperly installed Memory Riser card (FIN I0607-1).
  • Failure to properly assemble the Memory Riser to the correct torque setting can cause intermittent memory related system problems (FIN I0537-2).
PCI Card
  • Ultra 80 system board based systems may panic at boot time with certain PCI Bus configurations (FIN I0665-1).
  • SunPCi II and SunPCi IIpro cards may not respond after rapid/successive power cycling (FCO A0186-1).
  • A host system using the 375-0040-01 or -02 FC100/P FC-AL PCI card to attach to FC-AL storage (StorEdge A5x00 and A3500) may experience loop errors, which may affect data access to that storage (FCO A0164-1).
UPA Graphics Card
  • The 'fbconfig' (1M) command may return incorrect part number for XVR-1000 Graphics Accelerator (FIN I0945-1).
  • SunBlade 1000/2000 and Ultra 60/80 systems may exhibit a blank screen upon boot up with an XVR-1000 Graphics Accelerator installed (FCO A0200-1).
