Sun SPARC® Enterprise M8000 Server: Repair Procedures

This section provides tips (when available) for the most common repair procedures for the Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000 Server, which are included in the Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000/M9000 Servers Service Manual (819-4202).

The following table provides the available tips for each procedure.

Component Tips
Ethernet
  • Small number of Northstar Dual GBE -03 cards may fail on certain systems due to defective voltage mux. (FAB 1000525.1).
  • Northstar Dual GBE -02 cards do not support Solaris netboot on SPARC systems. (FAB 1000141.1).
I/O
  • Sun External I/O Expansion Unit Fiber Optic Link Card fails after 500 power-on days. (FAB 1019624.1).
Miscellaneous
  • Systems not updated to Solaris 10 08/07 and XCP 1061 will not be able to take advantage of certain platform features, may experience potential performance issues, may experience "disk full" related reboots on their eXtended System Control Facility Unit (XSCF) which can lead to XSCF replacement, and may not benefit from bug fixes included in the newer release of software. (FAB 1018991.1).
  • Improper ESD grounding procedures creates static charge and induced fault in secondary components during maintenance. (FAB 1021062.1).
Power Supply
  • Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 platforms manufactured prior to week 33 of 2007 may have insufficiently threaded shoulder screws on the connector of the power supply backplane (PSUBP). This could result in the loss of a power supply. (FAB 1018989.1).
eXtended System Control Facility (XSCF)
  • Active replacement of XSCF Unit on Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000/M9000 can lead to unit fault. (FAB 1019336.1).
