How to replace a X4150 HBA Card

Solution

DISPATCH INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT SKILLS DOES ENGINEER NEED:
General Sun X86 servers hardware knowledge
Knowledge of HBAs & IOs

DELIVERY REQUIREMENT:
As usual, this kind of replacement implies a complete production stop on server.
Thus, unless specified otherwise, this needs to be scheduled accordingly w/ customer.

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Replace a defective HBA.

WHAT STATE SHOULD SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?
As usual with any HBA replacement, its replacement may imply other changes in system.
For instance, replacing a network interface may impact everything based on MAC addresses.
Take recent explorer prior to hardware operation.

WHAT ACTION DOES ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

Make sure about location of HBA to be replaced.
Check whether front maintenance LED is lit or not.
Also, check whether ILOM/ELOM BUI reports a fault or not.
Check if BUI provides a radio button front of component to be replaced or not.
If OS is Solaris, pay attention to outputs of following commands :
# fmadm faulty
# fmdump -v
There are situations when HBA card is to be replaced W/OUT any Solaris FMA notifications
Recommendation is to make a short diagram of all installed PCI cards & corresponding cables.

STEPS :
1. Shutdown of host, make sure the host is powered off
2. Remove power cords.
3. Pull out server
4. Remove its top cover.
5. Note accurate location of PCi card to be replaced and its corresponding
PCIe riserboard
6. Unplug all cables from card.
7. Remove riser board
8. Carefully remove PCIe card from riser board connector.
9. Place PCIe card on an antistatic mat and write down both p/n and s/n
THEN NEW PART installation instructions :
10. Unpack replacement PCIe card and place it on an antistatic mat.
Write down both p/n and s/n
11. If necessary, replace long bracket by the provided short one.
12. Insert PCIe card into correct slot on riser board.
13. Replace riser board.
13.1. Slide riser back until it seats in its slot in back panel.
13.2. Tighten captive No. 2 Phillips screw securing riser to motherboard.
14. Replace top cover, push in server into its racks, reconnect all unpluggued cables and then
15. Replace power cords.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

A. Check new part is wll recognized during BIOS bootup process
B. Check that newly installed card is correctly recognized by OS
C. If OS is Solaris, & FMA was involved in failure detection of card,
run fmadm commands to update FMA internal databases about maintenance of card
D. If necessary, perform any additional step of reconfiguration due to presence
of new card (for instance,if this is a network card, it may be necessary to modify /etc/ethers file).
E. Optional : if a fault was detected by BUI prior to HBA replacement, check is it now cleared.
F. Check any maintenance LED is now turned off
PARTS NOTE: DocID=820-1852 show PCIe cards locations and procedure.
