Description
ipmitool is available for both Linux and Solaris[TM] Operating System, there is no version for Windows. Can this tool be used in the Windows environment?

Steps to Follow
The answer is yes.

A Sun Oracle version of ipmitool is now available for Windows, Solaris, and Linux
Please refer to <Document: 1009698.1> for further information.

The following instructions relate to the Sourceforge version of ipmitool, however it is recommended the Sun Oracle ipmitool version be used.

On a Windows XP machine, download a copy of the ipmitool distribution from http://ipmitool.sourceforge.net/. It can be directly downloaded using this link: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ipmitool/ipmitool-1.8.8.tar.gz?modtime=1147709985&big_mirror=0

Let's say it is downloaded to c:\junk\ipmitool-1.8.8.tar.gz. Install cygwin from http://cygwin.com/. The CYGWIN development tools are needed.

Start a cygwin shell (e.g. double click on the "cygwin" desktop icon left by the cygwin install) and do the following in the shell window:

cd to the directory where you downloaded the ipmitool distrubution. e.g. cd /cygdrive/c/junk
gunzip ipmitool-1.8.8.tar.gz
tar xf ipmitool-1.8.8.tar
cd ipmitool-1.8.8
./configure
make

And then under ./src, locate ipmitool.exe which you can move to somewhere convenient and run inside a DOS-box or cygwin shell window.

Note that when you try to run ipmitool there may be some complaints about multiple or incompatible versions of cygwin1.dll and you may need to find and rename (don't delete them in case you get the wrong one) one or more of these to get impitool to execute.

The only one we recommend keeping is /cygwin/bin/cygwin1.dll. Rename to something else: /WINDOWS/system32/cygwin1.dll.

You can use cygwin's "find" to find these files e.g. find /cygdrive/c -name cygwin1.dll.
