Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1003631.1 : Implications of Predictable Failure Test on Sun StorEdge[TM] 3000 Family with Firmware 4.11
PreviouslyPublishedAs 205125 Description Customers and Sun personnel need to understand what happens when a Predictable Failure Test is run on a 3310, 3510, or 3511. Steps to Follow With the deployment of the new 4.X FW for minnow storage, an optional setting which had been previously disabled will be turned on by default. The configuration parameter under Drive-Side Parameters is Drive Predictable Failure Mode(SMART) and the default setting is Detect and Clone+Replace. There is a good discussion in the Sun StorEdge[TM] 3000 Family RAID Firmware 4.11 Users Guide chapter 11 that describes SMART technology. The purpose of this document is to point out the implications to the user of running a Predictable failure test from the view and edit Drives menu. The user may very well believe that by running this "test" no real changes will be made to the configuration; however this is not the case. In order for a Predictable failure test on a drive in a logical drive to have any meaning there are two conditions that must have been set up. First the Periodic Drive Check parameter must be set to something other than Disabled and second the logical drive that the drive you want to test is a member of, must have either a global or local spare assigned to it. If Periodic Drive Check is disabled, then it is not possible to run a Predictable failure test on a drive. To determine if Periodic Drive Check is enabled from the Firmware Application or telnet menu go to: view and edit Configuration parameters Drive-side Parameters Periodic Drive Check Time To determine if a logical drive has a standby assigned from the Firmware Application or telnet menu go to: view and edit Logical drives and look under the #SB column to see if there is a number greater than 0; this is the number of standby drives assigned to that logical drive. If these two conditions are met and you run a Predictable failure test on a drive then a event in the event log is generated and the spare drive will be cloned from the source drive (the drive you ran the test on). If the cloning operation is not aborted, at the conclusion of the cloning, the spare drive will become part of the logical drive and the original drive will be marked as Logical Drive NONE, status FRMT DRV. To run a Predictable failure test on a drive do the following from the Firmware Application or telnet menu go to: view and edit Drives choose a drive that is in the logical drive you verified above. Look under the column LG_DRV for the logical drive number and click on that drive. One of the choices given is Predictable failure test by selecting and confirming this choice a Predictable failure test will be run. If you wish to either view the cloning progress or abort the cloning progress go to the same drive under view and edit Drives and click on the drive that has a status of CLONING and click on clone Failing drive you will then given the drive this drive is being cloned from and and option to view the cloning progress or abort the cloning operation, see below: Source Drive: Channel 2 ID 0 ING SEAGATE ST336752FSUN36G View clone progress Abort clone The important point here is that while the user may have thought he was running a "test" the end result of this operation is that the array could end up with no standby drive. After the cloning operation is done, it is the user's responsibility to re-assign a drive as a standby. If the user simply wishes to verify the Drive Predictable Failure Mode(SMART) parameters are set correctly and to test if the Detect and Clone+Replace work as advertised, but the does not wish the clone operation to complete, thereby losing an assigned standby, simply abort the cloning operation after it was started.
