Sun Fire V65x Server
All Platforms

Symptoms

The Sun Fire [TM] V60x/V65x server does not seem to recognize the optional Intel[TM] SRCZCR RAID controller PCI card. Different error messages may be experienced at boot during POST.

Changes

Make sure the RAID card is installed in the correct slot labelled "RAIDIOS" and that the PCI riser card is seated correctly.

Cause

The Intel[TM] SRCZCR RAID controller PCI card is only supported in a special slot labelled "RAIDIOS".
If the controller card is installed in any other PCI slot, the card may not be detected by the platform BIOS and therefore be unavailable to the operating system.

Solution

If the Intel[TM] SRCZCR RAID controller PCI card for Sun Fire[TM] V60x/V65x (P/N 501-6639) is not installed in the right PCI slot and/or Adaptec SCSI onboard controller settings are not properly configured, you might see different error messages at boot time during POST depending on the actual problem.

The installation instructions included with the SRCZCR RAID controller PCI card are correct (P/N 817-4031-11: RAID Controller PCI Card for the Sun Fire V60x and Sun Fire V65x Servers Release Notes).

The standard bracket on the PCI card needs to be replaced with the lower profile bracket included in the PCI card box and the RAID card with the modified bracket must be installed in the lower profile riser in the slot toward the mother board (RAIDIOS-enabled PCI slot).
The Adaptec SCSI onboard controller may have to be reset with default values and the RAID controller card re-installed to make it work.

If the RAID controller card is installed in the wrong PCI slot you may experience the an error during POST, similar to the following:

BIOS at 0x000C8000-0x000CD1FF
1 Controller(s) found, Selftests OK, scanning SCSI Bus ...
[PCI 3/8] DPMEM (B BBS) at 0xFC000000-0xFC003FFF, INT A = IRQ 11
[PCI 3/8] SRCZCR - HWL0 - 32 MB SDRAM/ECC - 2048kB Flash-RAM
[PCI 3/8] SN 5CC07943 - Firmware-FW-Version 2.34.09-R05C - Jul 21 2003
[PCI 3/8] No Siop available on primary PCI bus
[PCI 3/8] Controller is disabled
[PCI 3/8] Press RETURN to continue
[PCI 3/8]
ERROR: Controller at 3/8 could not initialize
No valid Controller

To make the RAID controller card pass POST and work correctly, you simply have to power off the system and install the controller card in the RAIDIOS-enabled slot in the lower profile PCI riser card. The slot is the lower one towards the motherboard as detailed above.

If Adaptec SCSI onboard controller BIOS settings are not properly configured you may experience an error during POST, similar to the following:

PCI Storage RAID Bios	Vers. 7.03D
Bios at 0x000C8000-0xFA003FFF
1 Controller found,Self test ok, scanning SCSI Bus....
[PCI 4/8] DPMEM (B BBS) at 0x000C8000-0xFA003FFF , INT A = IRQ 9
[PCI 4/8] SRCZCR - HWL0 - 32 MB SDRAM/ECC - 2048 KB FLASH-RAM
[PCI 4/8] SN 5CC07299 - FIRMWARE VERSION 2.34.09-R05C - JUL 21 2003
[PCI 4/8] I/O Controller Not found / not in standard mode
[PCI 4/8] Verify that RAID controller is in RAIDIOS enabled PCI slot
[PCI 4/8] Controller is disabled
[PCI 4/8] Return to continue

In this case, if you're sure to have installed the RAID controller card in the right PCI slot, you must disable HostRAID support and restore default settings for the Adaptec SCSI controller on the motherboard.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Remove the RAID card and reboot the system. This will show the AHA 79xx BIOS. At this stage press to enter Adaptec SCSI onboard controller BIOS.
  2. Press to enter the first controller "A"
  3. At the bottom select "Disable HostRAID Support". It then scans for disks, exits and then displays "Enable HostRAID Support".
  4. Now select "Config/View SCSI Controller Settings" at the top and press to enter this menu.
  5. Then press key to reset controller defaults, press and then "Yes" to reset all, "Yes" again to save changes.
  6. Press again then select the second controller "B" and repeat steps 3-5 above.
  7. Power off the machine and re-install RAID card. This time POST should run without errors and all should be well.
