Issue Description:
When multiple Enterprise 220R, 420R and Sun Fire 280R systems are
mounted into an EIA-310 compliant rack according to the installation
manuals, the units may touch or bind. This might make it difficult to
slide the systems out for servicing. The units may rub together and
produce noise. Customers may complain about this condition, although
the issue does not impact system functionality or operations.

These servers are designed to be installed into a 72-inch (184-cm) tall
Sun expansion cabinet or any other EIA-310 compliant rack. The
system's two slide rails are attached to holes found in the cabinet's
vertical mounting rails. It has been found that when multiple systems
are rack-mounted using spacing as found on pages 32-33 of the
"Rackmount Placement Procedure" (P/N 805-4748-10), adjacent units may
touch. This produces a serviceability issue where it becomes difficult
to slide the systems in and out of the rack.

The root cause of this binding issue is that the systems were designed
2mm too tall and when systems are rack mounted one on top of another,
there is a tendency for two adjacent chassis's to make contact with
each other causing the units to not slide easily on the rails.

Please follow the recommendations given in the Corrective Action
section. The fix is to simply allow extra space between systems when
mounting them into a 72-inch rack. In addition, it is recommended that
the plastic front panel not be used as a handle when sliding systems
out as it can easily break.

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.

1. Please refer to the appropriate manual below for detailed instructions
when mounting one of the affected systems into an EIA-310 compliant rack.

Sun Fire 280R Server Setup and Rackmounting Guide, 806-4805-10
Sun Enterprise 420R Server Setup and Rackmounting Guide, 806-1086-10
Sun Enterprise 220R Server Setup and Rackmounting Guide, 806-1087-10

2. If installing multiple systems into the same rack, offset the slide
rails by one extra hole on the vertical mounting rails to allow for
proper clearance between two adjacent systems. This can be done by
either counting the rack rail holes or using the Rack Buddy (shipped
with the Accessory Kit) to make sure that each slide assembly is
installed at the same height in the rack.

3. Avoid using the system's plastic front panel as a handle when sliding
a system out of the rack.
