Issue Description: 
This FIN is to inform the field of the need for careful handling of
the CPU/Memory boards in the Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800 products.

A small number of service calls indicated that EMI spring finger clips
surrounding the Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800 CPU/Memory boards may pop loose
and make contact with a CPU/Memory board.  The loose spring finger
clips can become entangled with the CPU/Memory board during insertion
into the chassis.

Loose EMI spring fingers may electrically short exposed components
on CPU/Memory boards being installed.  This may result in the
damage of the CPU/Memory board FRUs.  In extreme cases, shock hazards
could be created when the CPU/Memory board is shorted to ground
through the EMI spring finger clips.  

EMI spring finger clips have to make electrical contact with an
installed CPU/Memory board frame to eliminate electro-magnetic
interference emissions. Occasionally, the edge of the spring fingers
may catch on rough components or mechanical parts of the CPU/Memory
board while the board is sliding into the slot.

The FRU Kit F240-3920-03 which has implemented an ECO WO_21845
was released by product team to be used as a replacement spring
finger clips when the existing clips are damaged.

A supplement to the existing Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 Service
manual, 805-7363-12, rev A, will be released in Q4CY2001. It will
document the removal / replacement of the clips on the Sun Fire
6800/4810/4800 chassis.

Corrective Action: 
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above 
mentioned problem.

Engineers should be more careful when removing or replacing CPU/Memory
boards to minimize EMI spring finger clips coming loose and contacting 
CPU board components.  
 
Especially note the EMI spring fingers while inserting a CPU board.  If
the spring fingers do appear to be coming off while inserting a CPU
board, stop and press the spring finger clips back in place before
continuing the FRU installation.  Here's the location of EMI FRU
clips on each Sun Fire systems:

 . For the Sun Fire 4800, the EMI Clip FRU is for the Rear Right side
   of the chassis next to SB4.  The EMI Clip to the left of SB0 is not
   available as a FRU.

 . For the Sun Fire 4810, the EMI Clip FRU is for the Front Right side
   of the chassis next to SB4.

 . For the Sun Fire 6800, the EMI Clip FRU is for the Front Right side
   of the chassis next to SB5.  The two EMI clips to the left of SB0 are
   not available as FRUs.

Spring finger clips are mounted to the chassis frame with black plastic
rivets.  These plastic rivets may be pressed back into their mating
holes in the chassis.  If the spring finger clips appear to be damaged,
the fingers may be temporarily removed and replaced with a new set of
EMI spring fingers.  Do not operate the system long term without the
EMI spring finger clips.

Removal and replacement instructions for the EMI spring fingers will be
provided in an updated Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800/3800 Systems Service
Manual, p/n: 805-7363-12 which will be released on October 29, 2001.

The following is an extract from the updated manual CPU/Memory boards
section on the manual 805-7363-12:

 *  CPU/Memory Board EMI Spring Finger Clip Installation

    Removal and replacement of CPU/Memory board spring finger strip for   
    Sun Fire 6800/4810/4800 systems

    Tools Required:

       . Flat bladed screwdriver
       . Needlenose pliers
 
    A. Removal of CPU/Memory board spring finger strip

       1.  Remove CPU/Memory board SB5 for the Sun Fire 6800 system or
           SB4 for the Sun Fire 4810/4800 systems.  See Section 3.2.2
           "Replacing CPU/Memory Boards" on page 3-7 of the service
           manual.

       2.  Pry the top of the spring finger strip away from the chassis
           until the plastic rivet pops out.
    
       3.  Pull the spring finger strip away from the chassis with the
           needlenose pliers.

    B. Replacement of CPU/Memory board spring finger strip

       The CPU/Memory spring finger strip can be installed in one
       orientation only, with the rivets towards the sheet metal flange
       on the chassis.  The part is symmetrical, the top and bottom
       orientation is the same.  No special tools required for
       installation. 
  
       1.  Starting at the top or bottom of the strip, press the
           plastic rivet into its corresponding hole in the chassis.  
           Make sure that the plastic rivet is tightly seated into 
           chassis hole.
 
       2.  Repeat Step 1 for each of the succeeding rivets until they 
           are all properly seated.

       3.  Reinstall the CPU/Memory board and detach the wrist strap.
           See Section 3.2.2.2 "Installing a CPU/Memory Board" on 
           page 3-11 of the service manual for further instruction.

i)   In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to    
     contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of 
     the FIN. 
   
ii)  For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission
critical    
     support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN  (to their  
     respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer. 

iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as
the   
     need arises.
