MANUAL: 806-2987-10 Sun Noise Reduction Kit Installation Instructions
for Sun Ultra 30 and Sun Ultra 60 Workstations
Issue Description:
Ultra 30 and Ultra 60 systems have a noise level that some customers
find objectionable. All the Ultra 30 and Ultra 60 systems shipped from
Sun Manufacturing, meet all Sun published system specifications, all
known regulatory agency compliance and legal requirements for acoustic
noise, worldwide.

Since the Ultra 30 and Ultra 60 system products, as shipped are within
specification, the solution discussed below is a Product Enhancement
and as such can be purchased as an X-option from End User Price List
or from the Sun Spares Price List. The kit is intended to be installed
by Sun customers or field service personnel as a retrofit.

This product enhancement consists of a circuit which incorporates a thermal
sensor to monitor temperature within the Ultra 30 and Ultra 60 system.
Based on that temperature, it controls voltage to two of the system fans.
When it senses low temps it decreases the voltage to the fans such that
the fans operate at a lower speed. This reduces acoustic noise associated
with the fans.

As temperatures rise inside the box, the fan speed and associated acoustic
noise rises. At some point they will return to normal levels. This implies
that this add-on circuitry is most effective at low ambient temperatures
(in typical office environment) with light loads (e.g. Small configurations)
and gets less effective the larger the configuration and the higher the
ambient temperature. Under normal office environments, with typical
configurations, this circuit will reduce the system acoustic noise by
about 12dBA.

NOTE: This number (12dBA) is not a guaranteed specification, and will
change depending on the conditions as discussed above.

         ---
Corrective Action:
Enterprise Customers and Authorized Enterprise Field Service Representatives
that find the noise levels of an Ultra 30 or Ultra 60 based system to be
objectionable should note the following recommendation:

The following can be purchased as an X-option from End User Price List
or from the Sun Spares Price List. The kit is intended to be installed
by Sun customers or field service personnel as a retrofit.

This product will be added to the Sun End User Price List as a marketing
number, February 2000:

	X2087A U30/U60 No-Noise Kit

This product will be available from the Sun Spares Prices List and will
be "orderable" as of December 1, 1999:

	530-2867-01 ASSY,NO NOISE KIT,ULTRA30/60
Comments:
Please note that at some point in time (likely mid Q3FY00) this
technology will be integrated into all new Ultra 30/60 production
systems. For units that ship after that point the addition of this
X-option should not be done and would be ineffective. This X-option is
designed as a field upgrade for units made before this technology is
incorporated in new builds.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
     the FIN.

ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.

iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the
     need arises.
