Issue Description:
INFORMATIONAL ONLY
The Factory phased in shipments of -03 GBICS beginning early April 1999.
A5X00s with chassis s/n greater than 9917 will have the -03 GBIC, or an
IBM -02 CD GBIC. These modules appear physically identical to the -02
modules. Field personnel cannot differentiate between module revisions
without physically removing them to read the revision level on the connector
label. This would require an unacceptable maintenance downtime for host
systems.
FCO A0144-2 provides for proactive replacement of Vixel GBICs revision -02 and
below to address an early wear out of the laser component observed on some
parts in their second year of operation. The Vixel -03 GBIC incorporates
a new, longer life laser technology. The -03 GBICs are reliable and
acceptable for use. All IBM GBIC revisions have proven reliable in the field.
This FIN documents field identification of Vixel -03 GBICs.
The Vixel -03 Vertical cavity GBICS can be identified as follows:
Parts are marked as a -03; this marking can be found on the
GBIC connector (system interface connector) as "03a" for
-03 revision a.
The inside if the cable connector housing will be silver
in color on the Vixel vertical cavity (-03) parts; black on
the -02 cd lazer versions.
ON A LIMITED QUANTITY ONLY (aprox 3-5K of aprox 20k shipped)
of -03 vertical cavity vixel GBICS, the lettering on the
cable connector (visible from the outside of the system with
the cables installed) will be red or rust in color.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
