--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A small percentage of Sun StorEdge 3510 FC controllers may fail with Amber LED
which is due to a marginal component and/or marginal JBOD FC cables.

These marginal controllers and/or marginal JBOD FC cables may also cause drives
to fail with Amber LED.

An internal only link to the customer list identifying the affected systems
can be viewed via the below "Internal Only" URL;

   http://sdpsweb.central/FIN_FCO/FCO/FCO_A0237-1_Dir/Customer_List.sxc

To assist the field in a communication of this issue to customers, a Customer
Letter is provided via the below "Internal Only" URL;

   http://sdpsweb.central/FIN_FCO/FCO/FCO_A0237-1_Dir/Customer_Letter.sxw

(Note: the Customer Letter and Customer List above are in the A0237-1
directory but are just applicable to this release of A0237-2)

Affected Controllers
--------------------

This issue results in the following message in the event log/terminal
console:

    Wed Feb 18 10:13:31 2004
[0111] #4: StorEdge Array SN#8002658 Controller ALERT: redundant
    controller failure detected

The following Sun StorEdge 3510 FC controllers are affected:

    370-5537-04 (Revision 04/50) or earlier

Note: 370-5537-05 (Revision 05/50) is not affected by this issue however if
firmware 3.27R (or above) is not installed then it could have a similar failure
(see Bug 5012640).

Controller part numbers and revisions are shown on the bar code label on the
controller faceplate. Use the link below for label detail:

    http://webhome.sfbay/minnow_eng/3510_ctr_label.gif

Affected Cables
---------------

For StorEdge 3510 configurations that have JBOD(s) connected, the controller
failure message (shown above) and Amber LED can also be a result of potential
mating issues between the connector and the JBOD/jumper FC cables.

The following JBOD FC Cables are affected:

   370-5540-02 (TCC 35-0000118-005A)

The jumper/expansion cable manufacturer (TCC or BIZ) is on the label affixed to
the cable. Use the link below for label detail:

    http://webhome.sfbay/minnow_eng/TCC_cable.gif

Affected Disk Drives
--------------------

Sun StorEdge 3510 FC disk drives may incorrectly be failed with an Amber LED
due to affected controllers and/or affected cables (see above).

Typical drive failure indication include drive amber LED and similar messages
shown below in the event log:

   Fri Jan 2 06:54:04 2004
   [1101] #7: StorEdge Array SN#8008521 CH# ID#: SCSI Target ALERT: unexpected
              select timeout

   Fri Jan 2 06:54:04 2004
   [2101] #8: LD-ID 3CD20C7E on StorEdge Array SN#8008521: ALERT: SCSI drive
              failure (CH# ID#)

In cases of drive failure with symptoms shown above, refer to the Corrective
Action section to identify which components (drive, controller, or cables)
should be replaced.

Root Cause
----------

The issue with affected controllers is due to marginal components that affect
the reliability of the Fibre Channel disk loops. This results in intermittent
CRC errors on the disk loops that may lead to a shutdown of the controller due
to an identified firmware bug (5012640).

It has also been found that affected JBOD FC jumper cable(s) can contribute to
Fibre Channel reliability issues due to a mating issue with the Finisar SFP.
This mating issue creates an air gap when the cable is inserted into the SFP
resulting in unacceptable db loss.

The 3510 FC controller has been redesigned to minimize the effect of a marginal
component. This was an update to the RAID controller and the IOM board that is
all part of the controller FRU assembly beginning with the 05/50 release. The
TCC cables have been removed from the qualified list. New cables are being
shipped with the units to resolve the mating issue with the Finisar SFP and are
labeled BIZ 35-0000118-005A.

Corrective action was made available by engineering via ECOs WO_28721 and
WO_28832.

Corrective action was made available by Sun Services via LEAP# 2562 for the
controller and LEAP# 2563 for the cable.
Implementation:
---
| X | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
 ---

 ---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
 ---

 ---
| | UPON FAILURE
 ---
Replacement Time Estimate:
1 hour
Special Considerations:
When this FCO was originally released as A0237-1, it was "Upon Failure". The
implementation has now changed to Mandatory. A new Corrective Action has been
provided for the re-release as FCO A0237-2.

Even though this is a mandatory FCO, the Corrective Action procedures can be
scheduled with other work on a planned account visit if appropriate.
Corrective Action:
Note: All StorEdge 3510 systems should be running at a mandatory firmware level
3.27R via patch 113723-07 (or above). Please read FIN# I1078-1 for complete
information.

Controllers
-----------

The "SE3510 Health Check Utility" provided in patch 113729-01 must be installed
proactively to screen for this issue. Please use the above Customer List for a
list of affected customers.

Refer to the URL below on how to run the SE3510 Health Check Utility to
proactively capture controller(s) and cables that can cause this issue as
described above:

   http://webhome.sfbay/minnow_eng/utility_doc.html

Note: In the dual controller configuration, the utility cannot differentiate
which controller is affected by this issue.

If output from the Health Check Utility determines that the controller
is affected, replace as follows:

   - replace 370-5537-04 (or below) with 370-5537-05 (or above)

Replace both controllers if they are at -04 or below. Do not replace
controllers at -05 or above.

Cables
------

Visually check for affected JBOD FC cables having the "TCC" label. If affected
cables are identified, replace as follows:

   - replace 370-5540-02 (labeled TCC) or below
with 370-5540-03 (labeled BIZ) or above

Refer to the URL below to identify TCC cables:

   http://webhome.sfbay/minnow_eng/TCC_cable.gif

Note: The following warning generated by the "SE3510 Health Check Utility" is
just a reminder to check the cable:

  Jun 1 13:25:36 hba2-82 s3khc[1643]: 002294: Alert: Serial: 00223D,
Check the Sun StorEdge 3510 expansion FC Jumper Cables

The above message is not an indication that the cable is faulty or suspected. A
visual inspection is the ONLY way to screen for the cable issue. If the cable
is made by BIZ, please ignore the message.

Follow instructions on http://webhome.sfbay/minnow_eng/utility_doc.html
for "HOW TO REPLACE CABLE(S)".

Disk Drives
-----------

If there is an Amber LED on Sun StorEdge 3510 disk(s), please follow the
section "DRIVE AMBER LED PROCEDURES" in the "SE3510 Health Check Utility" at:

	http://webhome.sfbay/minnow_eng/utility_doc.html
