Issue Description:
Customers have reported problems seating PCI cards into the Ultra 10 riser
card. There are no error messages that indicate that the card is not seated
correctly. According to reports, the cards don't function or are not
recognized by the system.

You may be able to determine if the card is not properly installed by
looking at the connectors. The card should be parallel and even with the
connector, the PCI card should not appear to be at an angle.

The root cause has been attributed to the design of the support bracket.
The resolution was to change the design of the support bracket, add a metal
stiffener to the riser card, add spacers and increase the screw length.
The stiffener was added to provide support for the riser card during the
installation of PCI cards. These changes were made available to Enterprise
Services via ECO# WO_15178 as a kit (Sun p/n 540-4228-0). However the PCI
Riser Card FRU is still stocked as before (Sun p/n 370-3197-02) for those
customer replacements where this problem is not being experienced.

This kit is not needed for Ultra 10 systems manufactured after August 2000.
These systems include the new support bracket and the new riser card with
stiffener. These systems may be identified by a "C" printed after the
serial number on the E-Z label.

The old bracket can be identified by the vendor part number etched onto the
top of the bracket. The old bracket vendor part number is 342691400108 ROO.
The new bracket has a vendor part number of 342691400108 R02.

Replacement Time Estimate:
30 minutes
Special Considerations:
Corrective Action:
Upon failure replace Riser Card, 370-3197-02 (or below) and support
bracket (vendor p/n 342691400108 ROO) with Riser Card and Bracket Kit,
Sun p/n 540-4228-01.

This kit contains the following parts;

  Riser Card w/metal stiffeners (370-3982-01)
  Support Bracket (vendor p/n 342691400108 R02)
2 thick metal spacers (no Sun p/n)
  2 screws (no Sun p/n)

Removal Steps;

 1) Turn Ultra 10 system upside down, and remove the cover for
     internal access.

 2) Remove any PCI cards plugged into the riser card.

 3) Remove the riser card, 2-screws, pull straight out.

 4) Remove purple front bezel, 2-screws inside top of chassis, push
bezel outward and lift to remove.

 5) Remove the support bracket, 5-screws, 2-at front of chassis,
2-at rear of chassis, 1-at center of support bracket.

 6) To remove old support bracket, slide bracket upward, grasp rear
corner of chassis, pull outward to rear, slide end of support bracket
     out and clear of chassis.

Installation Steps;

 1) Install the NEW support bracket etched with RO2, start at top of chassis
and insert one end inside front of chassis, grasp rear corner of chassis,
pull outward to rear, slide end of support bracket inside of chassis.

Use the 5-screws and start each one in threaded hole BEFORE tightening.
After all 5-screws are started, tighten snug BUT take care not to over
     tighten and strip.

Note: Each end of the support bracket has 4-holes, 2-set of holes are
threaded, use the threaded holes to attach support bracket to
chassis. Don't forget the CENTER SCREW in support bracket.

     A. Spacers assembly to RO2 bracket.

Ensure the RO2 bracket screw hole surface is free from dust and
lint. If the spacer is not affixed to the RO2 support bracket,
        please proceed with the following.

Add the thick spacer to RO2, remove the backing tape from spacer,
align the spacer to RO2 mounting holes and press the adhesive
side of the spacer onto the RO2 support bracket. Ensure that the
spacer adheres to the RO2 support bracket.

        Repeat for second spacer.

     B. Riser card assembly.

Insert new riser card at an angle so that the right tab does not
interfere with the spacer or the right side of the RO2 support
        bracket.

Align the riser card to the 2-holes and press the NEW
riser with metal stiffeners into the motherboard connector,
taking care that card is fully seated.

 2) Attach the riser card using the longer screws in the kit, start
both screws before tightening. Again, check riser card for proper
seating at the motherboard connector and tighten screws snug.

 3) Install the purple bezel, 2-screws.

 4) Install any PCI cards.

 5) Install system cover.
Comments:
Refer to the Sun Ultra 5/10 Service Manual (805-0423-XX) Chapter 11, for
proper service procedures and precautions when removing the system cover
for access to internals FRU's and components.

PCI cards should not be forced into the connector, nor should the PCI
card be bowed or bent during installation. Sun recommends that you
follow the procedures outlined in the ShowMeHow multimedia presentation
that shipped with the system.

In addition to following the instructions outlined in the presentation,
you should support the riser card whenever you are ready to install a
PCI card into the connector. While supporting the riser card with a
free hand, carefully guide the PCI card into the riser card connector.

Verify that the PCI card is properly seated into the connector, then
complete the installation by following the procedures documented in
the ShowMeHow multimedia presentation.
