Instructions for the Reader

A Troubleshooting Guide is provided to assist in debugging a specific issue. When possible, diagnostic tools are included in the document to assist in troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting Details

  1. Validate the symptom from the list above.

    • If you received an email from the array or SSRR opened a Service Request then go to Step 2.
    • If you see a Device Alert, per the symptom set above,  then go to Step 5.
    • If you noticed a fault LED on your PCU or the global fault LED is lit, then go to Step 2.
    • If none of the above, go to Step 6.

  2. Validate that you can log into your 6320.

See chapter 2 of the Sun StorEdge 6320 System 1.2 Reference and Service Manual for details on logging into the array.
If you have trouble logging into the service processor on the 6320, refer to <Document 1019956.1> Troubleshooting Sun StorEdge 6320[TM] Loss Of management Access Faults.

  3. Validate "Overall Health Status" box in Configuration Service page immediately after logging into the 6320.

    • If the status shows "Error", go to Step 4.
    • If the status shows "Ok", go to Step 5.

  4. Validate the existence of a StorADE Alarm against the battery by logging into the Storage Automated Diagnostic Environment (StorADE).

    1. To open a secure connection, use the URL "https://<6320 IP>:7443". If you cannot log into the system, refer to <Document 1019956.1> Troubleshooting Sun StorEdge 6320[TM] Loss Of management Access Faults.
    2. From the "Home" window that comes up, check the "Device Health Summary" to see if there are alerts listed.
    3. To verify that an alarm is related to a disk issue, select the "Alerts" link in the "Device Health Summary" and search for disk drive alarms.
    4. Selecting the alarm link will display details about the alarm.

      • If there is an alarm, go to Step 5.
      • If there is no alarm, go to Step 6.
      • If there is no alarm and LED lit on the PCU or Global Faulty Indicator, go to Step 5.

  5. Validate Battery Status Against a Detailed FRU Report.

To collect a Detailed FRU Report:
    1. From StorADE, select the "Report" tab.
    2. In the "Reports" window, select "General Reports" and then "Fru Reports".
    3. In the "Fru Reports" page you will find a button labeled "Generate new Report-Set", always select this button before looking at any reports.
    4. From the "Fru Reports" window, under "Select report to display or Email", select the "Display" link in the "Detailed Fru Report" row.

Batteries may have the following State:

    State
    Definition
    off
PCU is switched off or disabled by he firmware
    missing
    Battery is missing
    normal
Battery is healthy and operating normally
    active
Battery is supplying power to PCU, indicating AC power failure
    charge
Battery is charging but no health tests against the battery are taking place
    in test
Battery is being tested and is either charging or discharging
    failed
    Battery failed testing
    fault
    A fault is/was detected
    disabled
PCU has been disabled and is not supplying power
    margin
    none of the above apply
    unknown
    internal software/firmware error

    • If the Battery state is off, missing, active or disabled, verify if there is a problem with the Power Cooling Unit (PCU). Refer to <Document 1019952.1> Troubleshooting Sun StorEdge 6320[TM] Power Cooling Units Faults.
    • If the Battery state is in test or charge, check the battery state again in 10 hours. The recharge time for a battery is typically between 3 to 10 hours. If there is no change in status after 10 hours, go to Step 6.
    • If the Battery state is failed, collect the following and open a Service Request with Oracle to have the battery replaced, as it has failed its refresh or health check cycle:

      • StorADE alarm.
      • Email (alarm from StorADE).
      • Cut and paste of fru report.

    • If the Battery state is fault, margin or unknown, go to Step 6.
    • If the Battery state is normal, you have validated that the battery is healthy and does not require any further action.

  6. Contact Oracle and open a Service Request.

Collect the following and contact Oracle to open a new Service Request:

    • Collect an Extractor, refer to <Document 1018865.1> Sun StorEdge 6320[TM] How to Collect an Extractor.
    • StorADE alarm.
    • Email (alarm from StorADE).
    • Cut and paste of fru report.
