Description
This document describes which troubleshooting steps to take when trying to resolve problems related to not being able to log in to a Sun Blade[TM] 8000 or Sun Blade[TM] 8000P Modular system.

Symptoms:

  • Can't login
  • Can't connect

Purpose/Scope:

This document describes which troubleshooting steps to take when trying to resolve problems related to logging into a Sun Blade 8000 or Sun Blade 8000P Modular system, and accesing the individual Sun Blade Server modules. It does not show how to login to individual blade servers.

Problems related to setting up user accounts is out of the scope of this document.

Steps to Follow
Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for your environment. The steps will provide instructions or a link to a document, for validating the step and taking corrective action as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.
Step 1. Verify the power is good

This can be done either locally to the chassis, or remotely via ILOM commands. See <Document: 1019443.1> How to verify power on Sun Blade[tm] 8000 and 8000P Modular Systems

Step 2: Verify the cabling

There are a number of different connection methods, and a number of cables and ports to which to connect.
See <Document: 1019472.1> How to verify proper cabling on a Sun Blade[tm] 8000/8000P Modular System

Step 3. Verify you can connect through the serial port

You will not be able to connect over a network if the IP address, MAC address, routing, etc is not setup on the CMM, but you should always be able to connect over the serial connection.
A. Configure a tty terminal device or use a terminal emulation software with the following settings:

* 8N1: eight data bits, no parity, one stop bit
* 9600 baud
* Disable software flow control (XON/XOFF)

B. The Sun Blade 8000 chassis can be configure to have 2 CMM ( master and standby ), identify the Master CMM
by looking for the CMM that has its Green Master LED turned on.

C. On the Master CMM,Connect a serial cable from the serial port (SER MGT) on the chassis panel to a terminal device using Sun Part# 530-3813 "DB9F to RJ45F, DCE Adapter"

D. Press Enter on the terminal device.

This establishes the connection between the terminal device and the CMM ILOM.

E. Log in to the CLI:

a. Type the default user name root

b. Type the default password changeme

When you have successfully logged in, the MASTER CMM ILOM should display the default command prompt:

->

The CMM ILOM is running the CLI. You can now run CLI commands.

NOTE: If a serial connection fails, resetting the CMM as outlined in Step 7 may help

Step 4. Verify there are no fault or warning LEDs

Again, this can be done either locally to the chassis, or remotely See <Document: 1019531.1> How to check Fault/warning LEDs on Blade 8000/8000P Systems

Step 5. Verify the Chassis Monitoring Module (CMM) network configuration

Once you have a serial connection, you can both check and setup the CMM network.
See <Document: 1019421.1> How to verify CMM network configuration on a SunBlade 8000/8000P system

Step 6. Verify the external network

Refer to:
<Document: 1017986.1> Can't connect to server
<Document: 1005533.1> How to verify network connectivity on an X64 platform

Step 7. Reset the CMM

If the connection problem is due to a hung CMM, this step may shake it loose See <Document: 1019558.1> How to reset a chassis management module (CMM) on a Sun Blade 8000/8000P system

Step 8. provide supporting data and open a Service Request.

At this point, if you have validated that each troubleshooting step above is true for your environment, and the issue still exists,
further in-depth troubleshooting is required. Please provide supporting data and open a Service Request.

See <Document: 1004194.1> How to gather information from Sun Blade[TM] 8000/8000P systems.
