Troubleshooting Process for L180, L700, L1400 libraries

This Knowledge Base Entry is to be used to assist Service Personnel in troubleshooting issues with L180/L700/L1400 Tape Library. This is a starting point and should not be considered all inclusive of problems that may exist.

Should you not be able to find your needs here, proceed to Knowledge Base searches and other information available online to work the problem.

Refer to 1016278.1on where to find Information on End of Service for Sun/STK Products.

Fault Symptom Codes:

All 3 libraries use the same microcode, the Fault System Code dictionary is common.

Installations:

Before starting a installation, refer to the proper Install Guide above for either L180 or L700/L1400 and follow the instructions in the headings for your specific installation.

Information about the books are included in the hardware manual section above:

Example - library, tape drives, personality module, or feature.

Note : If this is a conversion bill feature upgrade, you will need to follow the instructions in the feature kit. They may include 2 parts, both a conversion bill instruction document (CI) and a installation instruction sheet (I/I). You will have to review the conversion bill fully to know how to proceed and know how many documents are included with that kit.

The scope and type of problem you can see on an installation are far to numerous to be listed here in any type of detail.

In general, you have induced problems, cables are bad or mis-connected, power supplies are bad or have marginal voltages, early card failures or mis-configurations.

The starting point for these failures as with all failures is to define the failure, review the 'FAULT SYMPTOM CODES', and follow common best practices on troubleshooting of problems.

Library will not pass calibration - 1014835.1

Library fails Initialization, FSC3104 - 1015263.1

Service required light on - 1018383.1

Hand failed to initialize, FSC3203 - 1014443.1

IFCM/Router mapping problem - 1014763.1

Collecting library status and error indications:

There are two initial places to check for errors in a basic view.

1st - The physical library and drives.

For option 1, the physical library and drives.

Check the drives to see if they show a green online light or a red or amber error or service light, or no light or indicator such as power supply failure. Take the repair or service actions that would be required for that specific tape drive.

2nd - The attached world, IE switches, routers, HOST unit, application software.

For option 2, other vendor attachments, have the customer contact the service company's for those products to gather the error logs, review and make recommendations.

Check the library for the FSC history in the current buffer display and record it.  These codes can be reached via the operator panel menu, the CLI port or the library admin tool software.

Collecting Drive Status and also for issues like stuck tapes:

Note: For collecting specific drive status you need to refer to the service manual for that specific Tape drive. Most of the drives require special tools to pull in depth specific failure data.

** For basic checks you need to review the FSC codes in the library to see if any specific drive failures are posted.

** You also need to check the front panel indicators of the specific drives to see if fault indicators are showing or if the drive is displaying online and ready.

Information to provide to other vendors for multi-vendor problems:

Note: There is no absolute answer to this field, basically it brakes down to 3 general areas.

1. Host server, Hba vendors, and SANs providers -
The specific service vendors for these products will have to be contacted by the customer with the model, O/S level or driver level and ther contract number with that company for service help.

2. Back Up Application Vendors -
The specific application vendors for these products will have to be contacted by customer with the software name, version number and patch level, O/S level or driver level and their contract number with that company for service help.

3. OEM Tape Hardware providers that are sold Oracle/STK and installed on Oracle/STK libraries are serviced and supported through Oracle/STK.
That being said, the tools for OEM shown above in the subject titled, "Available Tools for helping to look at L180/700/1400 problems."
The Oracle/STK built drives - you are required to open a SR via MOS, provide the Forced Reset Dump data to Tape Hardware support who will work with Oracle/STK engineering to decode the issue.

Drive Dump Collection Process - 1014247.1

Performance and Performance Monitoring:

In general there are no tools or procedures for doing 'performance testing' as such. You can test the functionality of the library and drive with standard test tools such as SCSI/FC ToolBox.

Performance issues can involve a host of issues, such as Server, HBA, Backup application and system loads.  These issues are handled by groups like Oracle/STK Professional Services and are normally on a cost/charge basis.
