Description
This document will assist the user with establishing a successful, functional connection to the T1000 / T2000 System Controller (SC) environment.

Symptoms:

  • Initial installation; user needs assistance with first time SC access throuh Serial Management port.

  • User is attempting to connect to Network Management port for first time and needs assistance configuring Network Management port.

  • User is unable to access or  interact with the SC environment: can't connect, can't communicate.

  • SC appears to be hung, seems unresponsive.

  • SC access worked before, but not any longer.

  • User can access, but can't log into the SC environment.

  • User needs password for SC access but doesn't know SC password.  Password is  lost  or  forgotten .

Please validate that each troubleshooting step below is true for the user's environment. These steps will provide instructions or a link to a document for validating the step and taking corrective action  as necessary. The steps are ordered in the most appropriate sequence to isolate the issue and identify the proper resolution. Please do not skip a step.



Steps to Follow
Establishing a connection to Sun Fire [TM] T1000 or T2000 System Controller:

1. Confirm ability to successfully interact with the System Controller (SC).

For example: can commands be sent to, and data received from the SC  

If no , proceed to Step 2 and continue from there.

If yes, proceed to Step 5  for assistance with logging into the SC .

2. Confirm that a physical cable connection (using the correct cabling configuration) exists to the appropriate T1000/T2000 management port , either the Serial or Network management port.

For assistance, reference the Sun Fire T1000 Server Installation Guide or the Sun Fire T2000 Server Installation Guide (as applicable) via the links provided.

2a. For Serial Management port connectivity , reference: To Connect the SC Serial Management Port (summarized below).

Connect a Category 5 cable from the SER MGT serial management port to the terminal device that is being used to interface with the Serial Mgt port.

When connecting the Serial Mgt port to either a DB-9 or a DB-25 serial port connection, use an adapter to perform the crossovers given for each connector. If connecting to a serial port on a personal computer, use Sun Part No. 530-3100 or equivalent. If connecting to a Sun workstation or server, use Sun Part No. 530-2889 or equivalent.

Note:

The sc> prompt is displayed the first time the system controller is booted. The default configuration provides an ALOM-CMT user account called   admin  . There is no default password, so you must initially create a password using the system controller password command.

2b. For Network Management port connectivity, reference: To Connect the SC Network Management Port  (summarized below)

Connect a Category 5 cable from the NET MGT network management port to your network switch or hub.

Reference: To Log In To the System Controller Using the Network Management Port (summarized below)

For systems shipped from factory with System Firmware 6.2.x , the SC network management port is configured by default to retrieve network settings via DHCP and allow connections using SSH.

Note: Previous firmware releases (6.1.x) also support DHCP but it has to be manually enabled. Reference: Configuring the Network Management Port for more details. The Secure Shell (SSH) session capability is supported with system firmware 6.2.0 onward.

After the network management port (NET MGT) has been assigned an IP address by a DHCP server, you can connect to the ALOM-CMT System Controller using SSH.

Note - If you are unable to use DHCP and SSH on your network, you must first connect to the ALOM-CMT System Controller using the serial management port to manually reconfigure the network management port . Reference: Configuring the Network Management Port for more about this.

If not able to access the SC environment via either the Serial or Network Management ports (no sc> prompt presented) proceed to next step (Step 3) to check incoming power .

3. Check incoming power. Confirm that the power cord(s) are connected securely at both ends and that the incoming power source is known to be operational and within the required specifications ( 100 to 240 VAC, 50-60 Hz) .

Check all external LED's (make note of any amber LED's).

Ensure that the PSU AC input LED is lit green. (This indicates sufficient incoming AC power.)

Check that the Power OK LED is lit solid green (which indicates that the OS is up and operational) or blinking green (which would indicate that the machine is in standby mode or running POST diagnostics).

If the power cord is confirmed to be connected to a known good power source, yet the AC input LED is not lit green, there may be a problem with the power supply unit. Please contact Sun Support for further assistance.

4. Reset the SC. If there are no obvious power issues, yet the user is still unable to establish a connection to the SC,  then the next step is to manually reset the SC . To accomplish this, the user must remove and restore incoming power.

Note: To prevent possible file system corruption, be sure that the OS is not active at this time. Shut down the OS first. Reference: To Power Cycle the System

To manually reset the (possibly hung) SC, simply remove the power cord(s) from the power supply (or supplies), wait 30 seconds, then reconnect and test again.

If still no interaction is possible with SC, contact Sun Support for further assistance

5. Logging into the SC (This step assumes that the ability to interact with the SC exists)

I f this is a new installation:

I f SC had been configured and was operational previously:

Verify that the user is using the correct / known password. (check Caps Lock)

Can the initial password be created (if new installation) or entered and accepted (if working previously)  

6. Reset the password. If the SC password is unknown, lost, or forgotten then the user may reset the password using the procedure documented in <Document: 1012732.1>  How to reset the ALOM password on a Sun Fire[TM] T1000 or T2000 server   Note: This procedure requires physical access to the system so that the external power cables can be accessed and a serial connection can be made to the system.)

At this point, if you have validated that each troubleshooting step above  is true for your environment, and you are still unable to successfully log into T1000/T2000 System Controller , further diagnosis is required. For further assistance you may contact Sun Support.
