Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

This is a DIMM Size Reference.  It's purpose is to help a user quickly identify the size of a DIMM installed in their particular system utilizing the prtdiag command output.  This is not the only mechanism that can be used to identify DIMM size on these platforms - It is simply a quick method that can be used if other data is not readily available.

The systems included in this reference are:

  • Sun Enterprise 10000 (E10K)
  • Sun Fire 12K, 15K, E20K, E25K
  • Enterprise 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500 (exx00)
  • Sun Fire v1280, E2900, 3800, 4800, 4810, 6800, E4900, E6900, and Netra 1280, 1290
For VSP SPARC systems, please utilize <Document:1006832.1>.

Solution

ATR Tools - DIMM Reference Table
NOTE:  This document was created when the Systems TSC organization identified that too many action plans included incorrect part numbers for DIMM replacements. Before creating an action plan, please be certain the proper DIMM size for the appropriate platform type has been selected. Use the following information to determine the correct DIMM part size or consider using showfru to provide the part number automatically.

Sun Enterprise Classic Servers (3x00, 4x00, 6x00)

Rule:  Physical DIMM Size = "MB" entry in prtdiag divided by 8.

"MB" entry in prtdiag shows:

64MB

256MB

1024MB

2048MB

Physical DIMM size is:

8MB

32MB

128MB

256MB

Sun Enterprise 10000 Server (E10K)

Rule:  Physical DIMM Size = "Memory Unit Size" entry in prtdiag divided by 8.

"Memory Unit Size" entry in prtdiag shows:

256MB

1024MB

Physical DIMM size is:

32MB

128MB

Lightweight 8 Servers (n1280/n1290/v1280/v1290/E2900)

Rule:  Physical DIMM Size = "Size" entry in prtdiag divided by 2.

"Size" entry in prtdiag shows:

512MB

1024MB

2048MB

Physical DIMM size is:

256MB

512MB

1024MB (1GB)

Sun Fire Serengeti Servers (3800/48x0/E4900/6800/E6900)

Rule:  Physical DIMM Size = "DIMM Size" entry in prtdiag.

"DIMM Size" in prtdiag    IS   the Physical DIMM size.

Sun Fire Starcat Servers (E12K/E15K/E20K/E25K)

Rule:  Physical DIMM Size = "DIMM Size" entry in prtdiag.

"DIMM Size" in prtdiag   IS   the Physical DIMM size.
