Answer to compatibility question with IBM's new z196 system. Please contact VSM support for details.

Solution

At this time there are no known issues with compatibility of VSM and IBM z196.  However, it is also unknown how many customers are running this configuration.

Oracle's current target date for certification of VSM and z196 is  second quarter FY12 (Dec 2011).

Please contact VSM support for any new developments in this area.

Additional info from VSM engineering (Internal use Only):

There have been a lot of questions about whether Oracle supports the various Tape Products on the new Z196 processors.  Here is what we know:
  • there is NO Z196 processor within Oracle (being negotiated for late 2011)
  • we have run Ficon Express8 cards with z10-BC-E10 with z/OS 1.11(this includes VSM5)-Performance only
  • we have run V2Xf on z10-EC w/Ficon Express4
  • current EVT testing is primarily Z9 and Z10-EC on Ficon Express4
For the V2X2/V2X4f we should state it is only certified for mainframes in production as of Ship End - Oct 2009. That would be Z10.
