Familiarity or training for X4470 platform

DELIVERY REQUIREMENT:
Schedule with maintenance window

Estimate AP Duration = 1 hours

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :

Power off server.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

0.Identifying Faulty DDR2 DIMMs : Sun Fire X4140 Server Service Required LED is lit if system detects DDR2 DIMM fault

0.1 To use rear panel Locator button to identify faulty DIMMs:

0.1.1 Unplug all power cords from rear panel

0.1.2 Press remind button. It's located between two groups of DIMM Slots. Faulty DIMMs are identified with corresponding amber LED on motherboard

0.1.3 Ensure all DIMMs are seated correctly in their slots. If re-seating DIMM not fix problem, replace faulty DIMM

1. DDR2 DIMM GuideLines

1.1 X4140 Server supports following configurations: 2,4,6,8,16 DIMMs

1.2. Any even number of DIMMs is allowed. DIMMs must be populated in pairs and pairs must be identical in organization, size and speed

1.3 At minimum, Branch 0 must be populated with two DIMMS of same density (same type), same manufacturing part number

1.4 For optimum performance, DIMMs controlled by given processor should be same capacity and all single-rank or dual-rank. Mixed configurations are supported, but lower memory performance

1.5 If one processor configuration, memory be located next to installed processor, working from outside in. Don't install memory on side that not have processor

2. Preparing for Servicing

2.1 Verifying Memory Configuration

2.2 Type in ILOM: -> show /SYS/MB/P0/D0/

2.3 Disconnect power cord(s) from the power supply(ies)

2.4 Slide server out of rack

2.5 Attach an antistatic wrist strap

Attach antistatic strap to wrist and then to metal area on chassis

2.4 Remove top cover

3. Removing DDR2 DIMMs

3.1 Press “Remind” button to activate the DIMM status LEDs

3.2 Push down ejector tabs on each side of DIMM

3.3 Grasp top corners of the faulty DIMM and remove it from server

3.4 Place DDR2 DIMM on antistatic mat

4. Installing DDR2 DIMMs

4.1 Unpackage replacement DIMMs and place them on antistatic mat

4.2 Ensure ejector tabs are open

4.3 Push DDR2 DIMM into connector until the ejector tabs lock DIMM

5. Return Server to Operation

5.1 Install top cover

5.2 Slide server into rack

5.3 Reconnect power cord(s) to the power suppl(ies). Verify AC Present LED is lit

5.4 Power on the server

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:

Restart system and have System administrator verify functionality of system.
