How to remove and replace a T5120/T5220 Memory DIMM

Solution

DELIVERY REQUIREMENT:

Schedule for immediate replacement within contractual terms.

FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:

Memory/DIMM Failure

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY?

A data backup is not a pre-requisite but is a wise precaution. The customer should conduct an orderly software system shutdown. Then power down the system and disconnect the Power Cord.

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:

A) Identify Faulty FB-DIMMs Using the FB-DIMM Fault Locator Button or show faulty command

1. Extend server to maintenance position.

2. Disconnect power from server.

3. Remove top cover.

4. Open air duct to gain to access FB-DIMM Fault Locator button.

5. Press FB-DIMM Fault Locator button on motherboard.

6. Note FB-DIMM next to illuminated LED.

7. Ensure that all other FB-DIMMs are seated correctly in their slots.

B) Remove FB-DIMMs

1. Disconnect & stow the hard drive data cable.

2. Rotate air duct up & toward front of system.

3. Press Fault Locator button on motherboard to identify FB-DIMMs to be replaced.

4. Push down on ejector tabs on each side of FB-DIMM until FB-DIMM is released.

5. Grasp top corners of faulty FB-DIMM and lift it out of its slot.

6. Place FB-DIMM on antistatic mat.

7. Repeat Step 4 through Step 6 for any other FB-DIMMs to be removed.

8. If you do not plan to install replacement FB-DIMMs now, install filler panels in empty slots.

C) Install Replacement FB-DIMMs

1. Unpackage replacement FB-DIMMs & place on antistatic mat.

2. Ensure ejector tabs on connector that will receive FB-DIMM are in open position.

3. Align FB-DIMM notch with key in connector.

4. Push FB-DIMM into connector until ejector tabs lock FB-DIMM in place.

5. Repeat Step 2 through Step 4 until all new FB-DIMMs are installed.

10. Reconnect hard drive cable.

11. Install top cover.

12. Slide server into rack.

13. Connect power cords.

D) Verify Successful Replacement of Faulty FB-DIMMs

1. Access ILOM -> prompt.

2. Use show faulty command to determine how to clear fault.

3. Use set command to enable FB-DIMM that was disabled by POST.

4. Perform the following steps to verify the repair:

a. Set virtual keyswitch to diag so that POST will run in Service mode.

b. Power cycle system.

c. Switch to system console to view POST output.

d. Return virtual keyswitch to Normal mode.

e. Switch to system console & type Solaris OS fmadm faulty command.

5. Switch to ILOM command shell.

6. Run show faulty command.

7. Switch to system console & type fmadm repair command with UUID.

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
Restart software applications per applicable administration guides to resume system operation.
