FIELD ENGINEER INSTRUCTIONS

PROBLEM OVERVIEW:
Faulty hard disk drive

WHAT STATE SHOULD THE SYSTEM BE IN TO BE READY TO PERFORM THE RESOLUTION ACTIVITY? :
The BIOS RAID utility or Operating System should be configured by the customer such that the disk drive is free for replacement.
E.g. The disk may be part of BIOS RAID configuration, Volume Management software, mounted file-system, raw partitions, etc.
A data backup is recommended as a precaution and may be required to restore data onto a replaced disk.
Orderly shutdown of applications and OS may be required if the disk being replaced is the boot device and no mirroring is in place. Customer will need to restore/recover from backup

WHAT ACTION DOES THE ENGINEER NEED TO TAKE:
1. Locate the hard disk drive to be replaced (the amber Service LED may be lit)
2. For hot plug, the drive must be unconfigured and taken offline. For cold plug the server must be powered off
3. Ensure the correct hard disk drive is being replaced - the blue "OK to Remove" LED should be on before the drive is removed during hot plug operation
4. Press the hard drive release button to open latch
5. Grasp the latch and carefully pull the drive from the bay
6. Open the latch of the replacement hard disk drive and insert into the bay
7. Push the drive into the bay until it stops. Close the latch to lock the drive in place
8.For cold plug, power on the server

OBTAIN CUSTOMER ACCEPTANCE

WHAT ACTION DOES THE CUSTOMER NEED TO TAKE TO RETURN THE SYSTEM TO AN OPERATIONAL STATE:
For hot plug, configure the drive and verify drive availability
Use appropriate software commands to re-activate/re-sync mirror if manual intervention is required
