Solution

Misc information for multiple drives attached to the VSM subsystem
VSM4/VSM5 VTSS --
The GBIC will not accept configuration data from the VCF processor if there is a FICON cable plugged into the GBIC. This means, when making any configuration changes on a NEARLINK port, you should not have a cable plugged into the GBIC. If making changes to a current configuration, you need to cycle (unplug then plug the FICON cable back in) the FICON connector on the VCF card.
9840 drives --
9840D /SL8500 – Code level RJ.42.707 has a fix for 513A load failures. Issue seems to be the LSM will not allow the display to clear. This problem causes the RTDs to go into maintenance mode.
9xxx – When attached to a SL8500 LSM. The LSM could cause the drive to report “cartridge write protected” to the VTSS.
T10K Drives -- T10A - There are two versions of this drive:
2GB channel Speed (supports 500 GB cartridge) – can be used as RTD. A 2Gb T10k
315466601 (315464701 is the p/n on  he back of the drive) when put into VSM-FICON
mode is actually in FICON mode.
4GB channel Speed (supports 1 TB cartridge) – cannot be used as a RTD because
it does not convert from FIBRE to FICON channel protocol properly.
T10B - If the drive is directly connected to the VTSS, the T10B needs to be running RL.38.209 or higher. All previous levels assume the drive is connecting to a network. It will not link to the VTSS. If the T10B is attached to a SL8500 LSM the drive should be at RL.38.209 or higher. If the tape drive is running lower code, you should connect the channel cable to the drive before connecting to the LSM. It has been discovered the LSM causes the tape drive to change its WWN. This causes the VTSS to lose communication with the drive.
All Drives --
A common oversight is to install a VSM subsystem with its RTDs or to replace a failed RTD and forget to set the read buffer as required. 9xxx RTD's
must be configured to be in 3490 Emulation Mode. The Receive Buffer Maximum Data Frame size must be set to 2048 instead of 2112(default). The T9X40 Service Reference Manual, PN95740, describes how to change the 3490 Emulation mode (Emulation mode submenu) and the Receive Buffer Frame Size (Port A/B Maximum Data Size submenu)
