Description
Two CP3140 switches connected to the same router may cause network connectivity failures such as 'ping'.

Purpose/Scope:

This document shows how to verify if CP3140 is having sufficient MAC Address for its operation.

The procedure of replacing CP3140 is covered by standard documentation which can be found at http://www.docs.sun.com


Symptoms:

If both CP3140 switch boards from the same ct900 platform are connected to a common switch or router, a network connectivity failure such as 'ping' may occur.   Internal Bug ID: 6733477 provides additional detail on this issue, and the present work-around is to replace the Netra[TM] CP3140 (PN 375-3282) with a newer version (PN 375-3507).

The FASTPATH software uses all 8 available mac addresses from both cards (4 from each card), but it has been noted that earlier versions of the CP3140 card provide only 2 different mac addresses; and thus there are MAC conflicts between the Base Fabric and the Extended Fabric networks.

If the Base Fabric network and the Extended Fabric network are connected to each other either directly or through a L2 switch, there will be a MAC conflict between the Extended Fabric network's in-band management MAC address and the Base Fabric network's protocol MAC address. This conflict will cause undeterministic switching behavior when attempting to address the Extended Fabric network's in-band management.

Additionally, this can be identified by either visually inspecting the MAC address labels on the blade or by use of the 'show network' command and observing the difference of the mac addresses of the Base and Fabric network mac addresses.


Steps to Follow
Example by comparing the MAC addresses of the Base vs Fabric networks:

(F stands for "Extended Fabric" and B stands for "Base Fabric")

From a problematic blade  we will see only a difference of 2 between the Extended Fabric and Base Fabric Network Mac addresses


F: Burned In MAC Address.......................... 00:20:13:F0:E8:7B
B: Burned In MAC Address.......................... 00:20:13:F0:E8:79

( 00:20:13:F0:E8:7B - 00:20:13:F0:E8:79 )  equals 2.

From a blade which reports no problem, we will see a difference of 4.

F: Burned In MAC Address.......................... 00:20:13:F1:16:01
B: Burned In MAC Address.......................... 00:20:13:F1:15:FD

( 00:20:13:F1:16:01 - 00:20:13:F1:15:FD ) equals 4.

* Another general test would be to run 'show network' for both the Base and Fabric Networks and observe the difference of the "Burned In MAC Address":
