Description
Steps to upgrade the PDU firmware in Sun[TM] Modular Datacenter software versions 1.2.1 and later.

Steps to Follow
The PDUs inside Sun Modular Datacenter have firmware that may need to be updated after upgrading software.
Each rack in the Sun Modular Datacenter has two PDUs, a primary and secondary.  The hostnames and IP addresses for the PDUs can be found in the /etc/hosts file on the EMS.

The first step is to
determine what version of firmware is currently installed on all of the PDUs.  This is done by telneting to each PDU and reading the version in the login header.  For example:

$ telnet rack4p
Trying 10.10.10.14...
Connected to rack4p.
Escape character is '^]'.

- If the firmware is 5.3m or lower the network connection between the PDU and the EMS must be made direct with a simple RJ45 coupler.  Basically before doing the upgrade to the individual PDU, unplug its network cable from the Cisco switch, unplug the IMS network cable to that same Cisco switch and connect them directly together with the RJ-45 coupler.  Verify the network connection by pinging the PDUs IP address.  When the upgrade is complete make sure to reconnect the network to the same port it was in on the switch, this will keep the network cabling diagram correct.

- If the firmware is 5.3n or later the network connections can be left in the switch for the upgrade.

- Run the /opt/SUNWpbb/bin/maint/upgadepdu.ksh script for each PDU.  Including secondaries.  Make sure you can ping the host to confirm that it is up and running before running the script.  Some upgrades can take a long time to complete.  Ignore any errors that you might see, these errors are basically the script waiting for the PDU to respond and may take a while.

If you had to unplug the network cable out of the Cisco switch for the upgrade, make sure to reconnect the network to the same port it was in on the switch, this will keep the network cabling diagram correct.
