Description
This document provides some pointers on how to identify the various boot devices on Sun Fire[TM] T6300 and T6320 Blade Servers
Symptoms:

  • system will not boot
  • boot fails
  • can't power up

Purpose/Scope:

This document provides some pointers on how to identify the various boot devices on Sun Fire[TM] T6300 and T6320 Blade Servers

Steps to Follow
Please run the various OBP commands from the ok prompt as outlined below to verify boot devices on your T6300 T6320 blade servers

T6300 – booting from disk

Sun Blade T6300 Server Module, No Keyboard
Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc.  All rights reserved.
OpenBoot 4.28.9, 16256 MB memory available, Serial #74401088.
Ethernet address 0:14:4f:6f:45:40, Host ID: 846f4540.

{0} ok printenv auto-boot?
auto-boot? = false

NOTE: This may be the reason you have not booted – you have auto-boot? Set to false

To enable automatic booting, do

{0} ok setenv auto-boot? = true

but in the meantime, checkout that you can see the boot devices at the firmware level

{0} ok

boot-device =           disk net

If the device alias for disk does not match the device outlined by the probe-scsi command, change it as follows:

{0} ok show-disks
a) /pci@7c0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0/disk
q) NO SELECTION
Enter Selection, q to quit:
a
/pci@7c0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0/disk has been selected.
Type ^Y ( Control-Y ) to insert it in the command line.
e.g. ok nvalias mydev ^Y
         for creating devalias mydev for
/pci@7c0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0

{0} ok nvalias disk /pci@7c0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0/disk@0

Of course, this does not check that you have a boot server set up, but at least your network has activity. Network ports are shown in the Sun System Handbook at :

https://support.oracle.com/handbook_private/Systems/SunBlade6000/component.rear.html

If this blade server was in slot 5, the connection above would be NEM0, port 5

Again, if the device alias for your network is wrong, change it using

{0} ok show-nets
a) /pci@780/pci@0/pci@1/network@0,1
b) /pci@780/pci@0/pci@1/network@0
q) NO SELECTION
Enter Selection, q to quit:
b
/pci@0/pci@0/pci@c/network@0 has been selected.
Type ^Y ( Control-Y ) to insert it in the command line.
e.g. ok nvalias mydev ^Y
for creating devalias mydev for /pci@780/pci@0/pci@1/network@0
{0} ok

T6320 – booting from disk & network

The procedures are entirely as above, but note the slightly different device paths
