Description
This document describes how to reset (reboot) the Shelf Management Module (ShMM) of the Sun[TM] Netra CT900

Symptoms

  • ShMM showing fault LED

  • Can't login to a ShMM Network

  • Unable to telnet to the Shelf Manager

Purpose and Scope
To assist with problem diagnosis it may become necessary to reset the Shelf Management Module to ensure that it is running correctly. The startup messages should be monitored and captured for analysis. This document describes the various techniques that can be used.

Steps to Follow
These are the steps to follow to reset the ShMM
  • In order to monitor the boot up messages it is necessary to connect to the serial port of the specific ShMM. If you encounter problems please refer to <Document: 1019404.1> How to verify the serial cabling on the Sun Netra CT900.

  • Restart the Active ShMM from itself

    • Identify the Active ShMM either by the front panel status LED, See <Document: 1019516.1>  How to identify and interpret the LEDs on the Sun Netra CT900, or by issuing the clia shmstatus command (see example further down this document) if able to log in.

    • If not already logged in, log into the ShMM with username root and check you are at the LINUX # prompt.

    • Issue the reboot command

Example:

# reboot

The system is going down NOW !!

Sending SIGTERM to all processes.

Terminated

Please stand by while rebooting the system.

Note: In the example above it was not possible to create VLAN 55 on the secondary ethernet port (eth1) as it is not enabled due to the version of ShMM firmware being used.

  • Restart the ShMM from the backup

    • Log into the Backup ShMM either through the serial port or through the network (serial port is preferred since the network IP address will change when the Backup ShMM becomes the Active ShMMA

    • Issue the switchover command from the Backup ShMM and monitor the serial port of the other ShMM

Example:

# clia switchover

Pigeon Point Shelf Manager Command Line Interpreter

Running on the Backup Shelf Manager, with limited functionality

Sending switchover request to the Active Host

# clia shmstatus

Pigeon Point Shelf Manager Command Line Interpreter

Host: "Active"

#

The Backup ShMM will takeover control of the Shelf and become the Active ShMM as shown by the clia shmstatus command. At the same time the original Active ShMM will be rebooted and the boot messages will be output on its serial port as shown in the first example.
