Description
This document describes how to re-enable the system management network port on an MPC885 based ALOM+ systems after it has lost network connectivity following a network switch power cycle.
Symptoms:
  • Can't access ALOM through the System Management network port
  • ALOM network Port Hung
Purpose/Scope:

This document describes what to do to re-enable the network management port on ALOM+ systems after the connection has hung due to the switch, to which it is connected, having been power cycled. This behavior has been confirmed on systems attached to both Cisco 4000 and 6000 series chassis, using multiple copper network linecards and supervisor modules. CatOS 8.5 and IOS 12.2 are being used, ports are configured to auto negotiate port speed and duplex. When problem occurs serial access remains unaffected.
It is not intended that this document be a comprehensive guide to resolving generic ALOM connectivity issues.

Steps to Follow
Network access can be recovered by following the steps shown below
  • Connect to the serial port of the ALOM using your preferred method.

  • Check that ALOM responds when Carriage Return key is pressed

  • Verify whether the connection is made to the Host or the System Controller (SC)

  • If the response returned shows the ALOM is running a console session to the Host press the escape sequence #. to return to the System Controller prompt.

  • Log into the ALOM and issue the resetsc command and monitor output to verify no errors occur.
