Description
This document describes how to reset a Chassis Monitoring Module (CMM) on the Sun Blade[TM] 8000 Modular System and Sun Blade[TM] 8000P chassis.

Symptoms:

  • No response from system
  • No response from Blade console
  • Unable to access Blade Service processor
  • Unable to log in to CMMPoor network response from CMM/Blade SP

Purpose/Scope:

This document gives details of how to reset the chassis management modules (CMMs) on Sun Blade 8000/800P servers

It will describe various techniques which can be used.

Steps to Follow
Steps to follow to reset a Sun Blade 8000/8000P CMM
Three situations are described in this document.
  • How to reset CMM with network access.
  • How to reset CMM with serial port access
  • How to reset CMM with no login access.
If CMM hangs or similar behaviour is being investigated then
it is highly recommended to monitor and log the CMM's serial port output
on reboot.
Note there can be two CMMs installed CMM0 is the lower CMM and
CMM1 the upper.
See rear view of chassis in Sun System Handbook
There are two approaches described in this document.
Single CMM configurations and redundant (dual) CMM
configurations. For dual CMM configurations try the
Redundant CMM configuration technique first.
SINGLE CMM CONFIGURATIONS
Methods to reset CMM using network access.
Using ILOM interface(root login)
If it is possible to ssh to CMM as root then
-> reset /CMM
will reboot the CMM.
Using the sunservice login
If you cannot ssh as root, attempt to ssh as sunservice using the same
password as root and then use either of the following commands:
init 6
or
reboot
Both of these will reboot the CMM.
Using ipmitool
# ipmitool -U root -I lan -f passwd -H v-8000a-cmm0-gmp03 bmc reset cold
(where the file passwd contains the root password of the CMM)
Note if ILOM version is prior to 2.0.1.5 then CMM will not respond to any ipmitool commands.
Using the Brower User Interface (BUI)
Point browser at CMM address
Select CMM from left hand panel
Select Maintenance > Reset Components
Click on radio button on CMM that is to be reset
(/CH/CMM0 or /CH/CMM1)
Select reset from actions drop down menu.
Methods to reset CMM using serial access.
Ensure that a serial connection is made to the required CMM, see <Document: 1019314.1>
A login prompt similar to
SUNCMM0003BAF12E56 login:
will be displayed. The following two methods (described above) can be used to reset the CMM:
Using the ILOM interface(root login) and using the sunservice login
Methods to reset CMM with no login access.
Refer to Sun System Handbook CMM diagram
for locations of of two recessed buttons
There are two recessed buttons in the CMM situated in the left hand side of the CMM. The left recessed button marked -> <- on back of CMM forces a CMM reset. The other button resets the root password to changeme but does not force a reset
REDUNDANT CMM CONFIGUATIONS.
Many Sun Blade 8000 Systems have a redundant CMM configuration ie two CMMs.
If contact cannot be made to one CMM either serially or by network then an attempt should be made to connect to the other CMM. One CMM should be the
Active and one CMM the Standby. The following command will show the status of the CMM.
Eg
-> show /CMM/redundancy status
Properties:
status = Standby
Commands:
show
One can also check the green Active LED on the back of the CMMs
Refer to Sun System Handbook CMM diagram
If the Active CMM is hung then log into the standby and force a
failover
-> set /CMM/redundancy initiate_failover_action=true
Set 'initiate_failover_action' to 'true'
- > show /CMM/redundancy
/CMM/redundancy
Targets:
Properties:
fru_name = /CH/CMM0
initiate_failover_action = (none)
status = Active
Commands:
cd
set
show
CMM1 is Standby
To reset CMM1 from CMM0(Active)
-> reset /CH/CMM1
Are you sure you want to reset /CH/CMM1 (y/n)? y
Performing hard reset on /CH/CMM1
CMM1 should now reset. If it does not then revert to techniques for
single CMM configuration by trying to connect directly with hung CMM.
