Description
This document describes how to check LED states on a Blade 8000 and a Blade 8000P chassis.

Symptoms

  • System dead
  • Chassis dead
  • Blade dead
  • Blade not booting
  • Unable to log into the CMM
  • No AC

Purpose/Scope

This document gives details on how to check LED states on a SunBlade [TM] 8000 system and a SunBlade [TM] 8000P system, on both the chassis and the individual blades

The document will describe how to check locally (i.e. if you have physical access to the platform), and remotely using ipmitool commands

Steps to follow to check chassis LED status

Sun Blade 8000/8000P Chassis LEDs

The Sun Blade 8000 Modular System provides identical indicator and button functionality on the front and rear of the chassis.

The Front Indicator Module (FIM) is located at the upper left corner of the front panel, just above and to the left of the six power supply modules.

The Rear Indicator Module (RIM) is located at the rear of the chassis, among the chassis power inlets, between AC2 and AC3 inlets.

The FIM and RIM indicator LEDs provide a summary status of the chassis operating state.
  • Locate Indicator
  • Service Action Required Indicator
  • OK indicator
A full description on the state of each LED can be found in the Sun Blade 8000 Series Modular System OIS (see below)

The key LED to note is the Service Action Required Indicator - on indicates that a FRU or CRU within the chassis requires service, or that an external condition needs fixing (such as external ambient temperature or degradation of power).
This LED provides a summary of all other Service Action Required FRU and CRU indicators in the chassis.
It remains Steady On as long as any Service Action Required indicator on any FRU or CRU in the chassis is lit.

Explanation of other LEDs


As you will note from the IPMI output below, there are many LEDs in the system:
  • LCMM Live CMM (Active CMM) **
  • RCMM Remote CMM (Standby CMM)**
  • FIM Front Indicator Module
  • RIM Rear Indicator Module (mirrors FIM)
  • PS(0-5) Power supplies
  • FFM Front Fan Module
  • RFM Rear Fan Module
  • NEM Network Express Module
  • BL(0-8) Blade Servers
This is not an exhaustive list - The Hard disk drives (HDDs) also have LEDs. All LEDs are documented in the Sun Blade 8000 Series Modular System OIS (see below)

Look for fault_state=

and drill down to identify where the fault lies

1. Click 819-5846-15.zip in the Link column to download the ZIP package.

2. Save the file to disk.

3. Unzip the file.

The 819-5846-15 directory is created and includes all HTML files that comprise the Online Information System.

4. In a web browser, navigate to the 819-5846-15 directory and open the frames.html file.
The Online Information System for the Sun Blade 8000 and 8000 P Modular Systems appears.
