Goal

Description

Support exists for mixed spindle speeds in Sun Storage 3120, 3310 ,3320, 3510 and 3511 Arrays and Expansion Units.

The current supported disk drives have a rotation speed of 10,000 and 15,000 revolutions per minute (RPM).

Prior documentation noted mixing capacity, but not spindle speeds was supported.*

This document is to notify that mixed spindle speeds are supported provided certain rules are adhered to as explained below.

Solution

Guidelines:

1. The logical drive (LD) must consist of the same RPM drives.

2. If  performance is of concern, the disk assigned as the global spare should match the
highest speed RPM in the chassis.

Alternatively, local spares can be configured matching the RPM of the LD it is assigned to.

Disk RPM data is not available from Configuration Services User  Interface or the Telnet Main menu.

To check disk RPM:

1) Locate the disk drive model number by visually inspecting the disk label
   -or-

Display the disk drive model number by typing  "sh disk" from the sccli prompt.

2)   Match the  disk drive model information in step 1 with the information found in the
Sun  System handbook  at support.oracle.com to get the disk RPM.

"Caution - You can mix disk drive capacity in the same chassis, but not spindle speed (RPM).
For instance, you can use 36-Gbyte and 73-Gbyte drives with no performance problems if both are
10K RPM drives. Violating this configuration guideline leads to poor performance."
