Solution

The first step to get a look at the Sun Fire V440 server device layout is to enter the command cd /etc. This is the directory from which you can view the layout of the system.

Next, enter more path_to_inst. Please note that you can also use the cat command to view the contents of the file. The path_to_inst file gives you the layout of devices on the server. Do delete the path_to_inst file on the system. Deleting the file prevents the server from booting. It is suggested that you keep a backup of the path_to_inst file in case of accidental file deletion.

We ill highlight only the important information that you need to look at when reviewing the /etc/path_to_inst file.

As you can see, the first piece is the onboard psycho chip on pci@1c,600000 and the network chip which is on the pci@1c,600000, note that ce is highlighted in the file entry. This example also shows that it has four network ports on the motherboard.

The output shown displays all of the I2C information pertaining to the system. The I2C is the monitoring feature on the system on the port helps monitor temperature and make sure there are no faults.

Additionally it displays information about the power supply, the memory, the CPU and its temperature. It also displays clock information such as whether or not the clock is operating.

If there is an array listed in the system the path_to_inst file, it will be listed out as array information and include data such as the disk and its associated number. This example shows information for a Sun Fire V440 server with only one disk, pci@1f,700000/scsi@2/sd@0,0 but if the machine had other disks, the file would contain additional disk information such as scsi@2/disk@1,0 2,0 3,0 and if it is off in the array. Depending on where the SCSI card is installed in the PCI slot these values can also be displayed as pci@1 or pci@2.

The output also shows this system is populated with four UltraSPARC IIIi CPUs in slots 0, 1, 2 and 3.
