Description

This document shows you how to connect a serial port from a Sun Blade[TM] 150 workstation to an Annex terminal server.

Solution

Steps to Follow

The serial port connector of a Sun[TM] Blade 150 workstation is a DB9 male.
The port type of an Annex is RJ45.  Therefore, a standard UTP network cable and an RJ45F to a DB9F converter would be needed to connect them.  However, the Sun[TM] RJ45 to DB9 connector does not work (P/N: 530-3100-01):

https://support.us.oracle.com/handbook_internal/Devices/Cables/530-3100.html

As a result, a custom cable must be made as follows:

DB9 pin
Color codes
RJ54 pin
2 (rxd)
<---black--->
3 (txd)
3 (txd)
<---green--->
5 (rxd)
5 (gnd)
<---yello--->
6 (gnd)

The color codes are the colors found in a DB9 to a RJ45 converter that can be purchased on the market. (Refer to the preceding URL)  It is, of course, most important to get the pin-out right; colors are there to assist. In these converters and adapters the wires must be manually connected in the DB9 connector to make the required connections.
The colors should not be confused with the colors used in the CAT 5 cables.

The connection between the RJ45 on the Annex and on the manually made connector must be made with a normal "straight through" Ethernet cable.

Note:  To connect the DB9 to a RJ45 connector to a Sun[TM] Blade 100/150 chassis, use the DB9 extender supplied with the system (part number: 370-5267).

For a reference, refer to the URL for the DB9 and RJ45 serial pin-out at
