Description
Version 4.21M1 of the NAS operating system added support for prestaged computer accounts. Prestaging is the process of manually creating the NAS computer account in the desired location within Active Directory using Windows administrative tools to be later joined to the domain.


Steps to Follow
As noted in the description, this procedure is only supported on NAS OS version 4.21M1 or later.
Prestaging a computer account has two major advantages over the standard procedure of allowing the NAS to create its own computer account:

• It allows the user to choose the location within the Active Directory for the computer account. If the NAS creates the account automatically, it will always be created in the default 'computers' container off the root of the domain.
• It allows a non-Domain Admin user to join the NAS to the domain, as only the privilege to join an existing computer account to the domain, which is often a default user privilege. The privilege to create accounts is typically reserved for Domain Admins.

The computer account for the NAS is created with the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC applet, found under Control Panel/Administrative Tools on a Windows Domain Controller.

When creating the account, the checkbox for "Assign this computer account as a pre-Windows 2000 computer" must be selected, or the attempt to join the domain will fail. After creating the computer account, follow the standard procedures for configuring Active Directory settings and joining a Windows Domain. The NAS operating system should locate the newly created account and make use of it.
