Resolution
The L180/L700 is programmed to operate in the following manner:
The L180/L700 audits the CAP only as required. Notice of a CAP change is sent to the host after a CAP open. After a CAP open, the first time a CAP location is requested, an audit of the CAP will occur. This means that after the CAP open notification to the host system, the Backup software (Veritas NetBackup) is now aware that tapes have been entered into the library CAP and act upon this. This action should be an audit of the CAP and placement of the tapes. 1. A CAP open status is sent to the host. A CAP closed status is also sent when the CAP is closed. It is actually the CAP closed status that drives further activity from the host. 2. It is ACSLS (or Veritas, etc.) that drives the audit of the CAP. The library does not audit the CAP if a cartridge is requested from the CAP after a CAP open/close, only the location requested is audited. It is up to the host software to request a CAP audit. 3. A CAP open/close can be for the purpose of ejecting tapes, which would not require a CAP audit as an end result. 4. The library architecture is designed to minimize self-initiated tasks. The assumption is that the host should set the priority for library activity. In the case mentioned in item 3, an automatic audit of the CAP would cause the library to spend time looking for non-existent cartridges and possibly delay drive mounts, dismounts, or other time sensitive operations. 5. Veritas has published a TechNote on how to activate automated entering of cartridges placed in the CAP door. Veritas NetBackup uses the command 'vmudate' to perform the CAP action. The ATL implementation of this is that the library automatically unloads the CAP and then sends a message to the host that the library contents have been changed and a audit of the library is required. Overall, the ATL method is considerably less efficient than StorageTek method.
