Goal

Exerciser routine for libraries using SL Console.

Solution

Steps to Follow
This has complete information on an Exerciser Routine for libraries using SL Console with SLC code 2.40 and above. This can be used to test the LSMs within the Oracle/StorageTek[TM] SL8500 modular library system.

Download and unzip the file attached to this solution. It is offered as an exerciser routine for libraries using StreamLine Library Console, version 2.40 (2.23.00).

This version offers you an advantage in that it can run tests for an entire rail - there is no need to run two sequences to include opposite sides of the library. It will run to all slots with the "minimum/maximum" test configuration. In addition, version 2.40 "knows" that inner columns -3 through -8, and +3 through +8 do not exist; therefore there is no need for special entries for these locations.

Regarding the 2.40 (2.23.00) version of StreamLine Library Console, the file enclosed is a generic exerciser routine that is contained in the

FRS 2.40 operator panel. The enclosed file is supplied to you for remote application. You can add these manually to the local operator panel after a code update.

If you do not have an operator panel at this version, you must be aware of the following:

If you download the 2.40 version to the operator panel, you will lose any test suites that you may have loaded on that operator panel.

You can run the enclosed tests by simply downloading only the 2.40 PC (remote) version to your laptop; this method is described below.

Before you start:

1) The storage slots tests runs optimally if half the storage slots contain tapes and the other half are empty.

2) You must have diagnostic cartridges installed in the reserved (system) slots to test elevator and CAP slots.

3) The library must be offline to ACSLS/HSC.

4) Be sure to run a Full (disruptive) self-test first (Tools >>> Diagnostics >>> Full) - this will perform an audit and supply you with any targeting errors that may occur. If there are targeting errors, the test displays "failed" and reports the errors.

5) Correct any errors you find.

To load and initiate the enclosed file for remote testing:

1) Download the remote application of version 2.40 of StreamLine Library Console (available on the CRC).

2) After downloading, the following file structure is created for you: C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_id - (1st 5 letters of your last name + initials of your 1st and middle name)\SLConsole\config\library\SL8500\exerciser.

3) Copy the enclosed file and paste it into the exerciser folder.

4) Remotely log into a library through StreamLine Library Console.

5) Go to: Tools >>> Diagnostics >>> Manage

6) Click the Restore tab in the upper part of the screen.

7) Locate and select the enclosed file within the folder structure listed above.

8) The tests will appear in the lower window section.

9) Click each test suite that you want to run, then click Open

10) Click the Monitor tab. A new window will open.

11) Just above this new window, Click Window >>> Arrange. All test suites that you have selected will appear in individual windows.

12) To start each test suite, click File >>> Start

Note: Drive tests are not included. You must enter the drive type/location and match it with a corresponding tape (in the reserved/system slots) for that drive.

Warning Notice:
Track and STrack Motors may be damaged while running exclusively in the corners with SL8500 Exerciser Routines.
In the SL8500 support documents labeled "StreamLine SL8500 Modular Library System CSE Operational Checklist" and the "StreamLine Modular Library Systems Survival Guide" there are descriptions of Random Exerciser Test (RME) to be run during the initial install and testing of an SL8500. One of the tests labeled "Curved Rail Sections" will be removed or modified because of the potential of overheating the track motors.

Engineering recommends no excessive diagnostic tests for an extensive period of time that keeps the Sbot exclusively in the corner section of library, columns 3 to 6. Do not recommend corner rail diagnostics be looped more than 10 minutes or 50 loops.

There has been continued improvement in the SL8500 microcode to better handle high corner track activity but we still have some exposure to excessive motor heat build up that can impact library operations. The two SL8500 motors impacted are the Track and STrack Motors.

Extended testing of a PTP during installation testing that does not include a move out of the corner periodically could also overheat the track motors.
Engineering recommends a move out of the corner, i.e. move from column 14 to the PTP, if extended PTP testing is required.
This change in the recommended install diagnostic routine is due to in-house testing and investigations performed by Library Engineering. This exposure does not typically occur during normal customer operations due to delays usually associated with corner gets and puts, i.e. get from a cell in column 6 to a drive or a get from a PTP to drive.
