Goal

Diagnosing Read/Write Errors on Tape Drives

I/O Errors on all tapes mounted to drive

Read Errors on all tapes mounted to drive

Write Errors on all tapes mounted to drive

Solution

Steps to Follow
Use the following steps to resolve this problem:
1. Verify drive is at current firmware version. This can be done by displaying code level on the library Op Panel or SLC. If not available use SCSI/FC Toolbox to pull this information. Refer to  for Toolbox information.

2. Review Error logs for FSC's and possible media issues.

3. Identify tape problem if original tape fails on an another drive.

4. Run diagnostics on drive with a known good tape. This can be done using STDS on 9x40 drives of SCSI/FC Toolbox for LTO and DLT drives. Refer to for Toolbox information.

5. If diagnostics pass; check connectivity between drive and host.

6. If diagnostics fail; clean drive with a cleaning cartridge and run diagnostics again.

7. If diagnostics still fail; replace the drive. Refer to - Service Manuals, under Current Products/Tape/XXX/Manuals for drive replacement information. Note: XXX is the Product/Library the LTO drive is being worked on.
