Description
Currently on Sun Fire[TM] T1000 and T2000 servers there is no Solaris[TM] Operating System bundled command line interface utility for retrieving information from the Advanced Lights Out Management (ALOM) Chip Multi-Threading technology (CMT), such as environmental, fault and configuration data.

This document describes how to use Sun Explorer[TM] 5.4 to retrieve this information as an alternative to connecting directly to the ALOM CMT via the Serial or Network management port.

Steps to Follow
Previous Sun systems utilising ALOM system controller, such as the SunFire[TM] V210, V240, V250 and V440, used the 'scadm' utility to communicate with the system controller (SC).

There is currently no command in Solaris Operating System (OS) to do the same with the ALOM CMT SC on the Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers.

Sun Explorer is a system configuration information gathering tool, and can be downloaded from http://sunsolve.sun.com .  Installation instructions are also available on the SunSolve[SM] site.

Sun Explorer 5.4 comes with a Tx000 module which can gather ALOM CMT command output from the Solaris OS command-line.  To gather the ALOM CMT environmental, fault and configuration data using explorer, run as the root user:

/opt/SUNWexplo/bin/explorer -w Tx000

This runs the Sun Fire T1000/T2000 specific module of Sun Explorer, and provides output in the directory:

/opt/SUNWexplo/output/<explorer name>/Tx000

By default, output from the following ALOM CMT commands is gathered:

showdate
showsc
showsc version -v
showenvironment
showfaults -v
showfru
showplatform -v
shownetwork
showusers
showlogs -v
showkeyswitchshowcomponent
showho consolehistory -v

Internal Comments
The Sun Explorer Tx000 module:

/opt/SUNWexplo/tools/Tx000

calls the snapshotutility also located in the Sun Explorer directory structure:

/opt/SUNWexplo/bin/snapshot

to perform the actual communication with the ALOM CMT
The list of commands to execute on the ALOM CMT are entered into the snapshot.conf file:

/opt/SUNWexplo/lib/snapshot.conf

And although unsupported outside of Sun Explorer, the snapshotutility can be run by root, directly from the command line.
The following example:

/opt/SUNWexplo/bin/snapshot -c /opt/SUNWexplo/lib/snapshot.conf -o /tmp/ALOM

would result in the ALOM CMT commands listed in the snapshot.conf file being executed
with output being placed in the directory /tmp/ALOM

The directory will be created if it does not already exist

NOTE: RFE CR 6367394 scadm command on Solaris to access ALOM
has been submitted to request this functionality on the T1000/T2000 servers.
