Goal

The intend of this document is to describe the procedure for replacing a battery in the Sun StorEdge[TM] T3+ disk array. It applies to the firmware versions 3.x and higher.

Solution

First and foremost, the procedure to replace the battery rather than the complete PCU (Power Cooling Unit) requires the usage of an internal "dot" command. The "dot" commands require a password, which is available to Oracle service personnel.
As a result of this, there are two possibilities to replace a battery:

a. If an Oracle engineer will go to the site to perform the battery replacement, the battery can be ordered and replaced as a FRU.

b. If the customer does not have on-site support or wishes to do it himself, then he should replace the entire PCU, as stated in the customer documentation.

The following procedure covers only case "a" above, where an Oracle engineer goes to the site:

1. Replace the battery following the Field Service Manual 816-4774-10:

- Page 90 "Remove the UPS Battery" - all the steps.
- Page 94 "Replace the UPS Battery" - only the steps 1-4

2. Enable the "dot" commands (DO NOT GIVE THE PASSWORD TO A CUSTOMER!):

:/:<3> sun
Password: arrayservice
sun: commands enabled

3. Initialize / reset the warranty start date (also referred to as battery age) and clear the previous status that was stored in FruID:

:/:<4>.bat -i u<1-8>b<1|2>

4. Check that the new battery is working properly:

:/:<5> refresh -s

Example:
--------
Current Date and Time:  Tue May 20 12:42:50 GMT 2003
Next Scheduled Refresh: Mon May 26 02:00:00 GMT 2003

Battery   State     Last Health Check              Warranty Expiration
-------   -------   ----------------------------   ------------------------
u1b1      normal    Mon May 19 06:55:20 GMT 2003   Fri May 20 00:42:42 GMT 2005
u1b2      normal    Mon May 19 10:34:54 GMT 2003   Fri May 20 00:42:42 GMT 2005
u2b1      normal    Mon May 19 06:38:13 GMT 2003   Fri May 20 00:42:42 GMT 2005
