Goal

This document describes how to remove a stuck tape from a Sun StorEdge[TM] L20/40/60 Tape Library drive.

Solution

Steps to Follow
Note: In the below descriptions, the "drive module" refers to then whole module (drive and carrying case) and "drive" refers to only the drive itself.

Remove the "drive module" from the Sun StorEdge[TM] L20/40/60 Tape Library and view the top of the "drive" to determine if the tape has been rewound. If the tape IS NOT rewound, follow steps 1 through 5 below. If the tape IS rewound, follow only steps 4 through 5:

  • Turn the "drive module" on its top side (handle on bottom).
  • Insert a #2 Phillips screwdriver in the rewind hole on the bottom of the "drive" (side of "drive module") and engage the screw (Gently move the ribbon cable to one side of the hole).
  • Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to rewind the tape. Continue rewinding until the leader is seated in the tape cartridge (Do not use a power screwdriver).
  • Locate the spring-loaded latch that is near the tape opening on the "drive" and rotate it outward (ensure that you rotate both parts of the latch).
  • While holding the latch outward, rotate the thumb-wheel (drive gear, next to the latch) toward the rear, until the tape ejects.
