Description
Sun Fire[TM] 3800, 4800, 4810, 6800, E4900, and E6900 server's power distribution (AC and DC).
The attached (PowerDistribution.jpg) incorporates drawings from all systems into just one, hopefully, concise drawing.

Steps to Follow
See the attached picture for details.
NOTE:  The drawing only labels 3800, 4x00, and 6800 servers.  It should be noted that there is no wiring difference between the 4800 and E4900, as well as the 6800 and E6900, so these servers are also applicable for this diagram.

Legend:
  • The left side is basically the 48X0/E4900 systems
  • The center is the 3800 systems
  • The right side is the 6800/E6900 systems.
  • The RTU is used by all systems that are rack mounted and is shown at the bottom left of the drawing .
  • The RTS is shown on the lower right of the drawing and is just for informational purposes to get a better look at it.
  • The AC signals are shown in solid lines
  • DC are shown as dashed lines
  • Control lines are shown as dotted lines
J11 on the RTU (left side, unswitched) supplies AC power to one of the rack fans on all systems. J11 on the rear RTU (left side, unswitched) supplies AC power to the other rack fan on a 6800/E6900 system. J8 on the RTU (right side, switched) supplies power to the other rack fan on the 3800 and 48X0/E4900 systems.

J124A (left side of both front and rear RTU's) supplies AC to the two 6800/E6900 AC input modules, which in turn supplies AC power to the 6800/E6900 power centerplane. Six power supplies plug into this power centerplane which in turn supplies DC power to the 6800/E6900 logic centerplane.

The switched AC power outlets on the RTU supply AC power to the 48X0/E4900 ac input module which in turn supply AC power to the three DC power supplies. On the 4810 system, these power supplies plug into the power centerplane, which in turn supplies DC power to the 4810 logic centerplane. On the 4800/E4900 system the power supplies plug directly into the 4800/E4900 logic centerplane thus eliminating the power centerplane on the 4800/E4900. If the 4800/E4900 is a stand alone model (not mounted in a cabinet) then AC input power usually comes from another source besides an RTU.

The switched AC outlets on the RTU supply AC power directly to the 3800 power supplies without the need for an ac input module. These power supplies plug directly into the 3800 logic centerplane.

AC for the frame manager is supplied from the switched outlets on the RTU. A serial connection runs from the frame manager to the RTU left side J13 and J15 (on both the front and rear RTU on a 6800/E6900). This signal is used to power off the RTU from the frame manager. If necessary, you can disconnect these cables, and the RTU will power up. The 6800/E6900 has a control line that goes from the frame manager to the Patch Panel. This line connects the SC's to the frame manager. There is also a control line from the frame manager to the rack fans to monitor them for failures.

AC power for the D240's and misc devices are supplied by the switched AC outlets on the RTU. All switched outlets are tied together on both sides of the RTU (if one RTS is turned on, then all switched outlets on both sides are turned on).
