Goal

Many customers in the field require only minimal Solaris[TM] installation for Sun SPARC[R] Enterprise Mx000 Servers.
This document provides detailed information on required Solaris packages needed in order to manage the Solaris domains via Service Processor Software (XSCF).

Solution

Steps to Follow
This document provides details on what packages are needed or required to take full advantage of features available on SPARC Enterprise Mx000 Servers platform.

Customers that choose "Core Solaris Installation" will only have minimum packages installed for the domain running Solaris.
Often, this is sufficient for the tasks that customers need.
However, certain required platform features are not enabled in the minimal Solaris installation.
These features are platform specific and available only if domain running Solaris can communicate with Service Processor Software (XSCF).
FMA reporting and diagnostics are required on the SPARC Enterprise Mx000 Servers.

Solaris with "Core Solaris Installation" will not have the following features.
  • SSH (ssh communication with Service Processor Software XSCF)
  • NTP (Network Time Protocol)
  • Logarchiving  (syslog/console message archival on the XSCF)
  • DR  (Dynamic Reconfiguration)
  • FMA reporting (FMA errors captured on the Service Processor XSCF)

As each of the following features utilizes the DSCP interface, the packages that provide for the DSCP interface must be installed first:

The following are mandatory packages for FMA diagnostics
  • SUNWCdscp cluster packages :
  • SUNWdscpr
  • SUNWdscpu
  • SUNWdcsr
  • SUNWdcsu
Note : SUNWdscpr and SUNWdscpu belong to the Core distribution (SUNWCreq Metacluster); as a consequence, they will be installed during the fresh installation of Solaris on an OPL domain. This may not be the case when installing the domain using a flash archive from a different system.

To implement the following features
  • SSH
  • NTP
  • Logarchiving
please add the following:

The following are mandatory packages for FMA diagnostics

SUNWCsppp Metaclusters (Packages to support Solaris PPP) including the following packages:
  • SUNWpppd
  • SUNWpppdr
  • SUNWpppdt
  • SUNWpppdu
  • SUNWpppg

To implement the following features
  • DR
  • FMA reporting
please add PPP packages from above plus the following secure key management packages.

The following are mandatory packages for FMA diagnostics
  • SUNWsckmr
  • SUNWsckmu.u

Internal Comments
This applies to M3000, M4000, M5000, M8000, M9000 platforms.
All the features require domain/SP communication are via DSCP (Domain/SP
Communication Protocol) on OPL. DSCP builds on PPP technology and add Secure Key
management for DR and FMA with ETM.
