Description

This document explains how to physically replace and install a DIMM in a Sun Blade[TM] X6250 Server Module. It does not explain how to diagnose a faulty DIMM.

Available for this topic, a Video Tutorial; Brief how-to video tutorials that provide step-by-step instructions answering Sun's most frequently asked questions. View the video answer and/or follow the detailed instructions below.

Solution

Steps to Follow

Note: Always refer to the X6250 Server Module Service Manual 820-1185-XX at http://docs.sun.com/ for the latest updated procedures and ESD protection standards.

Caution: When removing a server module, install a slot filler within one minute to avoid adjacent modules from overheating.

Tools

  • Antistatic wrist strap

Assumptions

  • The server module OS has been shut down, the module has been powered off, and the server module is lying on an anti-static mat.

Replacement Steps

Caution: Before handling internal components of the server module, attach an electrostatic-discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the grounding post that is built into the rear of the chassis.  The system's printed circuit boards and hard disk drives contain components that are extremely sensitive to static electricity.

    1. Remove the top cover of the server module.

       A. Press down on the cover release button and, using the indent for leverage, slide the main cover toward the rear of the server module approximately 0.5 inches (12mm).

       B. Grasp the cover by it's rear edge and lift it straight up from the module.

    2. Locate the failed DIMM.

       A. Press the fault indicator button (S4) on the motherboard to illuminate the LED for the DIMMs that have failed.

       B. View which of the DIMM amber fault indicators illuminates.

          1. If the corresponding LED is off, the DIMM is operating properly.

          2. If the corresponding LED is on (amber), the DIMM is faulty and should be replaced.

       C. Also use the error log's logical name and trace it down to the physical device for verification that you have the correct failed DIMM location.

    3. Remove the DIMM.

       A. Before continuing with the next step, review the DIMM population rules  and the branch, slot, and DIMM installation order within the below table.

DIMM Population Rules

  • The server module can support a maximum of 16 DDR2 DIMMs.
  • Two DIMMs within each pair must be identical (same manufacturer, size, and speed).
  • The DIMM slots are paired.  The DIMMs must be installed in pairs (0 and 1, 2 and 3, etc).  The slots for the first two pairs are white; all others are black.

 ______________________________________

| Number of DIMMs |     Pairs/Slots    |   Branch  |

|________________|______________|________|

|               2               |       A0, B0         |       0       |

|________________|______________|________|

|               4               |       C0, D0         |       1       |

|________________|______________|________|

|               6               |       A1, B1         |       0       |

|________________|_________  ____|________|

|               8               |       C1, D1         |       1       |

|________________|_________  ____|________|

|             10               |       A2, B2         |       0       |

|________________|______________|________|

|             12               |       C2, D2         |       1       |

|________________|______________|________|

|             14               |       A3, B3         |       0       |

|             16               |       C3, D3        |       1       |

|________________|_____________|_____ ___|

       B. Press down the two DIMM slot side ejectors until the DIMM disengages from its slot, then manually remove the DIMM from its socket.

       C. Carefully lift the DIMM straight up to remove it from the socket.

Note: DIMMs are replaced in pairs to ensure they are matched, the CRU is a DIMM pair.

    4. Install the replacement DIMM.

       A. Ensure that the DIMM slot ejectors at each end of the memory socket are fully open (rotated outward) to accept the new DIMM.

       B. Align the notch in the bottom edge of the DIMM with the key in the DIMM socket.

       C. Press down evenly on both top corners of the DIMM until the ejectors snap over the cutouts in the left and right edges of the DIMM.

    5. Once the DIMMs have been replaced reinstall the top cover.

       A. Align the top cover with the guide notches and place flat on the server module.

       B. Slide the top cover forward until the cover release button clicks in place with the locking mechanism.
