Description
In this procedure we tried creating a sfs2 volume on one disk controller and extended segment (sfs2ext) on second disk controller, joined both the segments and publish it on nas head. It has been found that one can get around 25-33% performance improvement in nfs-nfs or local-nfs copy or other i/o intensive operations.

Steps to Follow
Steps to follow
Follow the recommended "best practice" by allocating the file system (volumes) from multiple separate LUN(Logical Unit Number). For optimum load spreading, segments should be of equal size, and be drawn from LUNs on different physical drive sets and PATH to different controllers.
Ultimately we end up getting the read/write performance improvement because of the fact that we are using both the controllers now, for each NFS volume.

Under certain conditions, before creating a segment, a 4.2 GB tar file took 4 min 10 sec.
Under similar conditions, after creating a segment, the same file took 2 min 50 sec.

How to create a segmented volume
1) Create the primary volume
a) Telnet to NAS header and go to menu. b) Select disk and volumes menu [D] c) Select a drive which pathed on controller, say 'A'. This would be denoted by d00 or d01. For example: isp2d001 or isp2d011 .
The d00 or d01 denotes the path through controller A.

d) Select edit and navigate to the unused free capacity to create partition. e) Give partition type as sfs2, name (say vol1) and size and initialize.
Create an ext segment
a) Select disk and volumes menu [D] b) Select a drive PATH through the other controller say 'B' or '02 or 03' using the terminology explained above. c) Select edit, navigate to the free capacity and create partition. e) Give partition type as sfs2ext, name (vol1ext), size (same as in step 5) and initialize.
Adding a segment
a) Now go back to disk and volumes menu. b) Select the primary partition eg. vol1. c) Select segments and add an extension segment, you will get the list of unassigned ext segments. d) Select the segment you want to add eg. vol1ext and proceed.
Now our segmented volume vol1 is ready.
