Goal

This document provides an overview of the Sun Fire[TM]1280/E2900/3800/48x0/E4900/6800 & Sun Fire[TM] E6900 & Netra[TM]1280/1290 server's System Controller Application (ScApp) firmware version features & requirements.

Before upgrading ScApp, always read the Release Notes, Install.info file, and README file that are included with each version of the ScApp firmware patch.  The firmware revisions listed below are considered the minimum major and minor level needed to provide stable operation for the listed servers and features.  Running firmware levels earlier than those listed below puts the system at risk for bugs which have been fixed, will reduce the availability features engineered into newer  firmware, and may cause unnecessary instability.  If a system is operating on a firmware level below those listed in this document, it should be considered for upgrade as soon as scheduling permits.

For maximum availability and stability, engineering suggests domains operate Solaris 10 and System Controllers operate ScApp 5.20.X.

ScApp 5.21.x was released to support USBRDT-5240 boards which have been obsoleted.  As a result, ScApp 5.21.x has been obsoleted by 5.20.11 (patch 114527-12). Please upgrade your ScApp firmware as soon as possible to keep current. See <Document 1006281.1> to download and install the most current version of ScApp.

*Additional Details for Sun Fire Mid-Range Server Features

  1. 3800-6800 and E4900-E6900 systems support up to 5 SSH connections in total. Only one SSH connection is allowed per Domain  plus  one  SSH connection to the Platform shell.

  2. V1280,Netra1280/1290, and E2900 systems support  up to 2 SSH connections using firmware 5.18.x..

* Summary Description of each  Sun Fire Mid-Range Servers Availability Feature

  1. Domain MAC/HostID can be swapped between Domains. Example: MAC/HostID from Domain A can be swapped to Domain C. Allows more flexibility in configuration and will not interfere with licensing requirements.

  2. SC monitors Domain heartbeat. If heartbeat or interrupts quit responding, SC initiates a reset of the Domain or posts a NOTIFY message depending on the setting of the hang-policy  Domain variable.

  3. Persistent record of event information stored in the component. Ensures faulty components will not be configured into a Domain.

  4. Run power on-self test (POST) at increasing diagnosis levels to identify and isolate faulty hardware (if any).

  5. SC can receive hardware failure messages from Solaris OS for specific events

  6. System error messages and 6 levels of messages in domain and platform logs are retained in additional memory if using SCV2 (enhanced-memory System Controller).  These persistent logs are also retained across reboots.  Six levels of messages stored: alert, critical, emergency, error, fault, and warning.

  7. Voltage Core Monitor. Proactive monitoring and analysis of CPU core voltage levels to identify CPU boards which may be at risk for experiencing certain identified types of failures.

  8. Diagnoses specific fatal and non-fatal CPU events.

  9. Correlates collected parity and ECC information to detect bad writers and bad readers, diagnose signaling events (Syndrome 0x071), and identify components which experience a specified number of ECC events in a specified time period when possible.

  10. The maximum POST diag-level used in Automated Recovery from Repeated Domain Panics  is now tunable.

  11. CHS is now updated for components identified by VCMON.
