Description
This document describes the reason for not selecting or configuring
the CDROM device as the master IDE device in Ultra[TM] 5 and Ultra[TM] 10 systems.
This document also describes the configuration of Sun[TM] standard internal
devices for Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 systems.

Steps to Follow
Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 Supported Internal Device Configuration.
he following configuration is not recommended for the Ultra 5 and Ultra
10 systems:
* The CDROM is selected as master.
* The hard disk drive is selected as slave on the same
IDE connector (either primary or secondary).
Configuring a CD-ROM as a master IDE device will cause performance, access, and mirroring issues, and lead to comparatively more errors than a hard drive:
* Performance Issue
ATAPI devices are generally much slower devices than
hard disk drives; therefore, they can slow the transfer rate
of the hard disk drive.
Note: CD-ROMs, CD-RWs, DVDs, and tape drives are
examples of "ATAPI" devices.
* Access issue
You cannot access the hard disk drive if the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM
is configured as master and fails.
* Mirroring issue
If the hard disk drive is part of a submirror, then it will bring
the entire mirror down if CD-ROM/DVD-ROM
failure occurs, even though the hard disk drive itself is fine.
The following configurations are the only qualified device configurations
for Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 systems. Any other configurations will not be
supported on the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 systems.
The following configuration is the recommended, standard configuration
for the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 systems:
* Put the fastest drive as a single device on the primary channel.
* Put the second hard disk drive as the master on the secondary channel.
* Put the ATAPI as the slave on the secondary channel.

Special Notes:
* The two hard drives that are mirrored cannot be on the same channel.
Both hard drives must be jumpered as the master device on two separate
channels.
* If a CD-ROM drive is included in an Ultra 5 system with the hard drive
mirroring configuration, the CD-ROM drive must be jumpered as a slave
device on either the primary or the secondary channel.
* If a mirrored Ultra 5 system includes a CD-ROM drive, the alias for the
CD-ROM drive must be altered at the Open Boot Prom (OBP) level
before a user can boot using the boot cdrom command.
* If a mirrored Ultra 5 system includes a CD-ROM drive, the alias for the
CD-ROM drive must be altered at the OBP level before a user can boot
using the boot cdrom command. This is because the alias for the CD-ROM
drive is hard-coded with the assumption that the CD-ROM drive is
connected as the master device on the secondary channel
(/pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f).
In a mirrored configuration, this is not true because the CD-ROM is
jumpered as the slave device on the primary or secondary channel.
Therefore, the alias is incorrect and must be altered.
Use the "nvalias" command to alter a CD-ROM drive alias on
the primary channel:
nvalias cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@1,0:f
To change the alias for a CD-ROM drive on the secondary channel,
enter the following:
nvalias cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@3,0:f
