Goal

Description
Customers and Field Staff who need to upgrade Robotics Firmware on the L20 L40 and L60 Tape libraries May not find complete documentation on setting up the RJ45 Ethernet port on the Remote Management board. Use of this port is required for doing firmware upgrades on the tape library.
This document is intended to supplement information in the following document...

Patch-ID. 111972
L20/L40/L60 robotics firmware upgrade

Solution

Steps to Follow
When a firmware upgrade is necessary on L20, L40 and L60 tape libraries the Ethernet RJ45 connector on the library RMC (Remote management card) must be configured.
The documentation in patch id # 111972 (step 2) assumes this is already done but the library setup and user instructions are not always available.

Note:
A library firmware upgrade is different than a tape drive firmware upgrade. Library robotics firmware cannot be upgraded without using this RJ45 Ethernet port.

To check current firmware versions use...
Main Menu->Information->Firmware Revisions

SETUP
1. Use the front LCD panel on the tape library to navigate to the NETWORK settings.
Main Menu -> Administration -> Change Configuration -> Network Access

2. Using the front panel (+ - ) buttons Set an appropriate IP address, Netmask, and Gateway (Gateway may only be required if connecting library to a Network.)

3. Navigate to, and set an administrator password for the library.
Main Menu -> Administration -> Change Configuration -> Password
(8 digits required.) Record this password somewhere safe. It will be required for all future access to the library.
(This is also required to allow remote browser based access.)
If security is not an issue, the recommended password is 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4.

4. Cycle the power on the library.

HOST SYSTEM
A host can be a Solaris[TM] system with Netscape[TM], or a Laptop/Desktop P.C. with Windows[TM] 95/98/2000/NT: Internet Explorer 4.01 and higher
Solaris Requirements: Netscape Communicator 4.5 or Netscape Navigator 4.08. Internet Explorer and HotJava are not supported.

Note 1: the browser must support Java 1.3x, If you are having unsupported Browser problems please contact Sun Service.

Note 2: If the library is not being permanently connected to a LAN then you can use an Ethernet crossover cable to provide a temporary connection between the host and the Library RMC and an ip address can be randomly selected.

Prepare Browser Host for Firmware download
1. Ensure the Host has an IP address setup (ifconfig -a for unix or winipconfig for Windows 9X, ipconfig for Windows NT, 2000, or greater)

2. Ensure patch Patch-ID# 111972 is loaded onto the host and uncompressed/un- tar'd

3. Open your Browser and type the ip address for the tape library in the URL field. If all is connected and configured correctly you should see a library menu.

4. If prompted to accept the certificate you need to chose YES/OK.

5. Follow the instructions in Patch-ID# 111972 readme to upgrade firmware.
